86 automatic disengage 4th gear sticks 200 1986

i have an automatic 1986 240 dl and on the shift knob there is a button that disengages 4th gear. on the instrument panel there is a light that looks like an arrow that comes on when this button is pushed. On my car this light remains on even when you hit the button to turn it off and the car does not shift into 4th gear. If i continuously push the button for a while sometimes it finally shifts into 4th gear. but this does not work all the time. does anyone know what could cause this to stick and how to fix it?

See if my post on 1/16/04 on 240 automatic transmission overdrive is helpful.

ON an automatic, the o/d is controlled by that button and by the transmission and kickdown cable. The car starting default position is o/d engaged. It won't actually engage until the engine load and road speed are appropriate.

When you push the button you inhibit the trans from engaging.

The relay circuit that controls the amber arrow is separate from that which controls the solenoid on the tranny. The arrow can perform OK, and the tranny not.

It is likely that your o/d relay is failing, given that the arrow stays on when it should not. Of course, the problem could lie in the wiring to the shifter button, but that's less likely.

If you are able, the resoldering of the o/d relay is pretty simple. There is a post, Randy Starkie I think, that details the procedure and has pictures.

The labor to remove and install a relay is the same for new or resoldered one, and is quite small. Both require removal of the glove box, unclipping of the relay and removal of the connector. Budgetary constraints often require resoldering rather than installing a new relay. Your call.

Good Luck,

Bob

This is a common relay failure on these cars. It's a white relay located just underneath the center heat vents. Easiest access is to remove the glovebox. They say the relays can be resoldered, but if you plan to keep the car awhile, buy a new one (<$50). Don't buy a used one as it can soon develop the same problem if it isn't already bad. I went through 2 used (white) ones before I found an orange one for earlier models that still gets the job done but it shuts the dash light off totally.
