auto trans shifting reluctantly 200

My '93 240 is reluctant to shift into 3rd.

It will, at about 45-50 mph under normal circumstances, or if I manually shift to second and then back to third.

Overdrive doesn't engage until about 60.

Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you are low on AT fluid. Check it while the engines is hot, on a level surface, with a lint free rag. Top off if nessacary. If fluid is at the proper level check the condition of the fluid. It should be RED in color and there should be no BURNT smell at all. If it is a darker red/brown color & smells burnt you most likely need a tranny flush. Type in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUSH in the search and you will find an endless number of post telling you how to do this flush. Good Luck!

    Sincerely,

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the ATF a little low but the real culprit was the kick-down cable which had become tangled with the stud coming out of the intake manifold (hope I'm using the correct terminology). It seems it made some slack at some point and got wrapped around the stud. Problem solved. Thanks for the help.

I'm fascinated with your tag-line suggesting that you're going to undertake a cruise control installation.

Tell me about this. Are you buying an aftermarket rig or cannabalizing what you need from somewhere?

My '93 has no cruise but my older '86 has a non-functioning cruise.

Do I have the makings of a functioning rig for the '93?

I last did a cruise install on a '78 Ford Fairmont, easily the worst car I ever owned, including the VW, Buick, Studebaker and Vauxhall.

          Thanks

I yanked everything needed for the Cruise Control installation from a 84 240. The harnesses, comupter, vacuum, sensors, mercury switch, & steering column switch will all fit in my 79 264GL. The only thing I am missing is a different throttle pulley that will allow me to hook up the cruise control cable. Its a shame too because I had passed up the correct pulley a couple months ago at the boneyard but could not afford to get it at that time. Oh, well I will still keep looking.

As far as your cruise control situation the 86 cruise would not fit on the 93. I believe that after 90-91 they changed the whole setup and instead of pulling on the throttle pulley it pulls the gas pedal down. I'm sure you could make your 86 cruise work. Not many components to inspect and/or replace and you should be able to find the replacement parts you need at the boneyard.

As far as the 93 either a newer style aftermarket kit or if your lucky a cruise control setup out of a 90+ Volvo 240 that has seen the end of the road. I think there is one for sale on E-bay that would fit your 93 but I think it is going for $100+.

If you need any help troubleshooting your faulty 86 cruise post on the board or e-mail me. I'm sure it will back up and running in no time. Good Luck!

Try checking the adjustment and operation of the kickdown cable. I had this happen when I accidently pushed the cable out of its holder up by the throttle spool. I believe the FAQ have more on this.

You win the prize. The kick-down cable had become tangled with the stud coming out of the intake manifold (hope I'm using the correct terminology). It seems it made some slack at some point and got wrapped around the stud.

      Another dragon slain.

      Thanks for the help.
