940 Questions 900

I had 2 questions to ask..

I have a 93 940 with 126k.

Both seatbelts in the front broke (receptacle part) recently (in the last month) There seems to be broken plastic inside. Is this a common problem? (both broke) Is there a fix for this? The dealer wnats a lot of money for replacements.

My SRS light went on the other day and has stayed on (is this latched?) Is there a way to reset it myself? It happened when it was -5 degrees F outside, and I was hoping that whatever caused it might have gone away when it warmed up.

I am now an accident waiting to happen with no seatbelts or srs.

Thanks for any info..

Seth

I'm at work and don't have access to my wiring diagram, but memory tells me that the seat belt circuit is involved in the SRS system, and that your seatbelt not fastening properly could trigger the SRS light.

Looking up the codes as per the FAQ may shed some light on the situation.

You might want to check with dealer.
I think I read somewhere that Seat belts have a lifetime warranty and then you can get them to replace the seat belts for free, which is a good price.
good luck.

your computer will tell you what the SRS code is. Check out the 700/900 FAQ for more info.

Thanks Tom. I didn't know the codes could be accessed by the car itself. I will run the procedure in the faqs. Thanks again.

In the FAQs, look for OBD (On Board Diagnostics) The trouble codes and how to retrieve them are described there.

My 940 doesn't have the seatbelt issue. Sounds like some plastic got dislodged and into the seatbelt receptable. If so, you should be able to take the console apart and clear. It's hard to imagine the seatbelt catch itself failed. If you do need to get parts, I go used. Sweden Auto Salvage near Sacramento is a good source.

No info on the SRS.

Thanks, while looking at the SRS FAQ's I found this:

Seat Belt Won't Fasten. [Query:] The driver's side safety belt on my 1990 740 will not fasten. It slides in the fastener/buckle but does not click and the holder will not latch to hold the metal tip in the buckle. When looking in the buckle, I can see some kind of red plastic device which I can move around but can't get out. Anybody had this problem before and know how to fix it? [Response: Alan Carlo] I had a similar problem on the passenger belt. I took it out of the car and disassambled the plastic cover. It is glued/sonic welded together so I had to cut/pry it apart. Once the cover was off I found a lot of junk in the mechanism. Carefully disassemble, clean and lightly lube the mechanism and test it before re-gluing the cover together. If memory serves there is a plastic slide and spring in there. It is clear how it works once the cover is off.

I will take it apart and see if I can fix it. Thank you for your response.
