I'm interested in finding out where this handbrake was available.

So they exist here and there on certain models but not certain markets. Does anyone have one of these? (NMI) 140-160

That looks exactly like the 544/210 setup. Are you sure that pic is from a 140 list?

Best,

Yes, it is in the pre-73 catalogue. Don't know about the post-72 catalogue as I do not have it, but someone reported seeing it in the last model 140.

The only 140's I have seen here in Oz with the centre mounted handbrake are the final (1974 ?) series.

All the earlier ones I have seen have the side-mounted handbrake (like my '72 142S rally car) which is mounted on the floor on the RHS next to the drivers door and has a dirty great steel rod running across under the drivers seat to the centre of the car & then connects to the handbrake cable.

An incredibly stupid system actually ... .I mean, how are you meant to do handbrake turns with THAT sort of setup !! I have seriously considered trying to put a late model (centre mount) handbrake in my car for that reason ...

Dave

Actually, I actually like the hand brakes by the door... I just prefer using my righthand for the brakes. Humm...
(my car is also RDH as it's in Bangkok... also a fun place to use your handbrakes in traffic...)

Makes sense to me. One hand on the gear leaver (or in my case transmission selector), one hand on the hand break, and my legs do the steering of the huge oxwagon steering wheel (like my father used to do when he lit his sigaret while driving).

It works well in a RHD where you pull the hand break with your right hand (or on a LHD if you are a left handed person). Otherwise it must be horrible :-)

Anyone got info on the improvements in the police car models?

It look like this picture came from www.gcp.se, in which case you can just look at the next/previous page which will tell you as a note in which market it was available. The notes are a bit cryptic (from memory), but can be figured out.

My RHD South African 1971 144S has the hand brake between the driver and his door, and I'm almost sure it would be the same for UK and AU. It operates a steel tubing that actuates the hand brake cable from the middel of the car (same as yours), so the above setup in the middel would be easy to fit or have been fit. Perhaps it was on the original model, later moved to the outside to move the seats (safer) to the inside? There does seem to be lots of space between the seats and the doors, but not in the middel.

Not a clear answer, but I think it is safe to assume it was not for the RHD market allone. Doesn't the Amazon (i.e. predecessor) have the hand brake in the middel?

Just had a look in my pre-73 parts catalogue, but see there are no notes on the center band brake. I have however rediscovered that a special model pre-73 142 was available as a driving school car (would have been nice). The instructor would probably have needed access to the hand brake, in which case the center hand brake might have been installed. Don't think they thought of dual controls back then! The center hand brake was also available as a kit, for retrofitting. Hope this helps.

It were a mounted on police cars regulary together with loads of other fun stuff as limited slip differential and so on. Often also with tuned engines to get better perfomance when getting hands on bad guys.

Umm, no, my 73 has outside mount. That location has one major advantage not mentioned- a spot for a generous and functional console, whereas the center position wastes it and the outboard position is then doubley wasted
