Replacing the AW55 with the AW70. Does the drive shaft need switching also for my '79. 200 1979

Hey guys. I have everybody telling me to put the AW70 in my '79 instead of another AW55. Okay. You sold me. I am doing it already. Okay! NOW can I use my old driveshaft or do I need to also buy another driveshaft to fit the new (used) tranny. Of course I prefer to use the old one. I need answers pretty quick. Thanks!!
JG

If you have the time to hunt around for one, try to locate a AW70L. Volvo began switching their non-lockup transmissions for lockup version on the 240 sometime in '92 and they were available in the 740s as early as '89. I'm in the process of swapping the AW70 in my '87 240 for a AW70L that I pulled from an '89 740 sedan.
I've got a 2,000 mile trip coming up in a month or two and I would love to get 2-4 mpg better on the highway. Before I do the swap, I'm planning on changing the tailshaft bushing and inspecting the valve body (possibly changing a few of the check balls for preventative maintance).

If you'd like the benefit of the lockup torque converter, there's isn't any extra work aside from a normal AW-70 conversion. You will need a driveshaft from any AW70 equipped 240, and follow the information listed in the previous posts (linkage, support, etc).

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

For the later trannies, the tailcone needs to be swapped out too, as they didn't have the speedo output gear.

New one; it's shorter due to the OD. You also need the exhaust header pipe, the trans cooling lines, and the shifter, and you have to drill some new mounting holes for the trans crossmember.

Minor addendums ... 200 1979

When I did the swap on my former '79 245DL, which was a 49-state car, none of the exhaust needed to be touched, nor the shifter itself. The shift linkage needed changing, though.

For the OD, I used a flip switch and relay. Wiring was ran through the firewall and down under to the solenoid.
