Gas and Oil 700 1989

I'm new to the Volvo ownership club and I have a 89 740 GL with 148k. I have read several reports on gas and oil and I'm still confused. I have starting running 91 octane and my gas milage it better, are there benefits or drawbacks (besides price) to running the higher octane? And should I run synthetic oil? I have read a few websites concerning oils but still don't have a clear cut idea if I should switch to a synthetic and if so, any recommendations on brands?

Thanks

You should only need to run 89 as far as the gas goes. Oil needed is 10W30 weight. Dino oil is fine as long as you change it on a regular 3000 to 5000 mile interval. When it comes to the oil filter you can not do better than a Volvo factory filter. It is made by Mann in Europe. If you had a Turbo I might say that synthetic would be a benefit to you. Just make sure you use a GOOD oil. As long as you keep up on the factory maintance schedual you should have few problems. If you got the car from someone out side your family and don't really know the service history you should change all fluids and filters.
If you haven't yet get a tune up. New plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air and fuel filters, get the timing, and AMM checked. You will be amazed how much better the car will run. If you have any questions on oil the best site on the web
is www.bobistheoilguy.com The people that hang on their forums are some of the most knowledgable oil, additives, filter people you can find.

Check online for the Mann filters. Usually between $4 and $5 shipped. Maybe less if you buy enough other stuff to get free shipping.
