Crankshaft Positon Sensor 200 1992

When I replaced an intermitent CPS on my 92 245 I found rotting insulation in the wires that likely caused the failure. The outer rubber sheathing was dry rotted, the foil shielding was intact but as you can see from the picture the insulation around the inner wires was shot. One of the wires does not have insulation normaly but the red and white wires should have it. The insulation was very brittle and fell off removing the CPS.

I thought the biodegradeable wiring was solved in 88? Has anyone else noticed this? Dan

Inspired by your post and picture I last night investigated the sensor on mine (1993). It looked exactly like yours!
I had been wondering whether an aging sensor could be responsible for the very ocasional miss or cold-start difficulty, and having eliminated anything else I followed your advice. I was prepared for finding it corroded tight, but instead was surprised to find that although the bolt was stiff in the threads the plastic sensor was loose.
They are so cheap, and at 10 years and 290,000 miles I thought a new one was probably long overdue.
    Many thanks

    Cliff

Yep, same on my 940, the insulation was gone. One thing about Volvo is that they don't ever seem to fix these things, while the good thing is that this board seems to know all these things.

Same thing happend to me. I nearly got rid of the car until someone on this board (Don Foster) suggested I change mine. It seems the sensors with a yellow band around the end were all defective. I read somewhere that Volvo came out with a bulletin about this.

Apparently they still used the biodegradable wiring on smaller items. It also shows up on the rear end speedometer transmitters on late 240s.

Also look for it in other harnesses designed to flex, like the wagon tailgate wiring and the central locking key and button switches-- characterized by high strand count wire with silicone rubber insulation. I don't believe this is part of a global environmental concern.
