Happy New Year!
Last summer my son discovered why you don't run 15 psi of boost on regular gasoline, and destroyed the engine in his car. That engine was a used low mileage 1991 model, and the installation in Evan's car (1984 760T) was only about 6 months old. The replacement engine was from a very well cared for 1990 760T I found in the local U-Pull It. While the car had about 190,xxx miles, there were no black oil deposits under the cam cover when I looked at the engine. Evan had been talking about rebuilding an engine for his car, but this used one looked to have been very well cared for. It had Volvo spark plugs, and a Volvo sticker for a recent timing belt change. I pulled the engine on a day off work, and Evan paid me the $125 for it. This engine does not smoke, or use significant oil, and has no piston slap even when it is started in 10ºF weather.
What I am saying is, if the bores look good, I would buy the engine if it would not jeopardize my marriage. But your situation is different than mine. If the early B230FT in your 1988 car has been well cared for, it will probably last a very long time even with the puny connecting rods.
How did the Nivomats look, and how many miles on the car?
