What is this? Turbo +? 700

While at a salvage yard I was looking at turbo hoses and on one found an electrical device on the nipple that branches off the hose at the turbo's output. It's the fitting that joins the crank breather to the turbo hose. On my '88 it's just a plastic nipple but on this car, 760 turbo maybe, there was larger nipple/sensor and a connector wired into the harness that feeds the AMM.

What is it? My first thought was that it was part of the Turbo + system. Wondering if I should run back down there and investigate further.

That was a 1990 or later 760, right? 1990 model year cars have LH 2.4 Jetronic instead of the LH 2.2 which you have on your 1988 745T. The PTC resistor is there on LH 2.4 turbo cars.

The Turbo+ unit is on the front of the airbox, and there will be a tee fitting in the hose between the wastegate actuator and the approximately 1/4" elbow on the turbo output. There will also be three wires at the Throttle Switch. Turbo cars don't ordinarily use the full throttle set of contacts in the Throttle Switch, but the Turbo+ unit does.

How is you wife doing driving the 850?

Eventually we will sell my wife's 1986 745T and buy a late 940T sedan. She will miss the manual transmission, though. I might have to convert one more 700/900 series to manual transmission.

You're right John. It was on a '90 760 turbo (GLE?) I didn't have time to check the mileage on that car but would that likely have the larger rods and thrust bearing moved back to the end of the crank? The head was gone but the short block is there for the picking. My wife would kill me. Yes she likes the 850 but hasn't been driving it daily. Next week we'll park the van and she'll use it daily. I'll be putting new tires (15") and liftgate struts on it very soon.

Yes, the 1990 engine will have the 13mm connecting rods and improved crankshaft. Here, short blocks are $75 at the U-Pull It. What id the bores look like?

Since the head was gone the bores were dirty but I didn't notice any rust. If I get back Friday I'll look into it. I'm waiting for them to get this car off the ground so I can get the downpipe. Mine is pretty rusted at the cat flange. I may also pull the Nivomats for anyone who might want them.

            Happy New Year!

Last summer my son discovered why you don't run 15 psi of boost on regular gasoline, and destroyed the engine in his car. That engine was a used low mileage 1991 model, and the installation in Evan's car (1984 760T) was only about 6 months old. The replacement engine was from a very well cared for 1990 760T I found in the local U-Pull It. While the car had about 190,xxx miles, there were no black oil deposits under the cam cover when I looked at the engine. Evan had been talking about rebuilding an engine for his car, but this used one looked to have been very well cared for. It had Volvo spark plugs, and a Volvo sticker for a recent timing belt change. I pulled the engine on a day off work, and Evan paid me the $125 for it. This engine does not smoke, or use significant oil, and has no piston slap even when it is started in 10ºF weather.

What I am saying is, if the bores look good, I would buy the engine if it would not jeopardize my marriage. But your situation is different than mine. If the early B230FT in your 1988 car has been well cared for, it will probably last a very long time even with the puny connecting rods.

How did the Nivomats look, and how many miles on the car?
