any suggestions on where to get a decent torque wrench ? (n/m) 900

My friend just had his (identical to mine) harbour freight clicker tested his against a Snap On, and there was no percaptible difference. He built motors for 5 years with that wrench.

Unless you have deep pockets and a Snap-On man around the corner, Sears makes a great digital readout torque meter that has a half inch drive that is placed on the end of a breaker bar, attach socket below unit and there you go. Extremely accurate too.

For spark plugs, $20 simple no name torque wrench would do.

I do lot of repair work, so I have 3.
$20 no name for doing not too accurate torquing (1 - 60 ft/lbs)
$100 SK Facom to cover low end (6 inches/lb - 250 in/lb)
$80 Sears brand to cover between 50 - 250 ft/lbs

I have a couple of Sears units. My larger one is a beam type and is 30 years old. The click type is fine for almost all applications but if you ever rebuild an engine you need to measure the turning torque of the crank after the bearings are torqued and a beam model is needed. Besides, the beam type is much cheaper.

I've had good luck with the Craftsman clicker torque wrenches. Normally priced at $69, they periodically go on sale at $59. Serious mechanics (certainly not me!) assert the clicker wrenches are more accurate than the beam wrenches. Just remember to reset to zero when storing them. For "bottom fishers," i heard that Harbor Freight has a clicker wrench on sale now for $10, and the calibration even checked out on one purchased. chris in vermont, 244, 765, 945, r100rs, r80rt, etc.

For most purposes, the Sears Craftsman series will do just fine. Ought to be a big post-Christmas sale going on shortly. Good time to load up on all the stuff you wish you'd gotten for Christmas.

This might be as inflammatory as "what type of oil should I use".

I have had very good luck with a click type ratcheting 0 - 150 ft-lbf Craftsman. I use a beam type for my smaller stuff, 0 - 50 ft - lbf, but you can find click types that small if you want. Just to let you know about durability, I had my 0 - 150 cal checked at work (nuc plant test equipment shop) and it was within specs for us to have used on reactor plant equipment after about 10 years of DIY use.

Everybody has a favorite and price isn't always an indicator of quality.

HTH,

I must be in the minority. I've had bad luck with the Craftsman click-type, having gone through 3 of them. Failure from a broken twist-lock or simply lost calibration.
