960 Sound system questions (many) 900 1992

Ready?

1. Is it possible to install a new radio in this car simply, or am I going to have to run new wires, play with the amp, buy a new harness, etc?

2. How does the amp fit into the whole sound system? I mean, how does the radio head unit connect and relate to it, because my new head unit doesn't have the same amp connector.

3. Where is a good place (online probably) to buy the necessary hardware to install a new head unit?

4. My rear speakers aren't working (before I played with the sound system they didn't work too) any ideas why?

Ok, I think thats enough to start with, if you have any clarifying or other quetions for me, please ask, I want to learn as much as possible about this.

    1. Yes, to install a new radio just get a standard size radio, harness, and pocket.

    2. From what I know, there is no factory amp on the 1992 960, this is from personal experience with my 1994 960. But I could be wrong -- If there are wires on the back of your stock radio coming from the 5 pin din connector labelled -amp-, you probably have a factory amp.

    3. Check up on www.crutchfield.com. Generally, they'll tell you what fits and what doesn't. Then you can head on over to circuit city or any audio store, and they will carry your pocket and wiring harnesses for about 10-20 bucks per.

    4. To check this, use a working good radio, plug it into your car's radio harness and see if you're rear speakers work. No point in rummaging through your car's wiring system if it is the radio with the problem.

    Hope this helps.

There definately is a factory amp in this car, I went to Best Buy and they told me that they don't have a wiring harness for this car because it has a factory amp and that I would need a special wiring harness, either that or I will have to hard wire it.

I will check Crutchfield though, thanks.

Jag: If your '92 960 had a CR-814 head unit, it has an amp. The Cr-814 runs the dash speakers from the head unit and the other 4 speakers from an amp, usually a model HA 4140, part number 1373082. There will be a slender black cable running fron the round din connector at the back of the radio to the amp, which usually is above the foot well on the driver side. It's a finned aluminum box about 4 x 6 x5 " ( size varies depending on whether you have that model or the #3533004 amp). The '94 940 of which someone else wrote may have had a CR-915, which ran 6 channels off the head, and had neither need nor provision for an amp.
You can get from Crutchfield, or anybody else who has Scosche or Metra parts, a connector which will plug into the vehicle harness, with all the wires neatly labelled, for about $10. Then you hard wire that to the neatly-labelled wires on your aftermarket unit and you're done.
        You will have left over:
        1. the factory amp
        2. the factory amp-to-head unit cable ( the 6-pin round din)
        3. the sub-harness which connected the radio, amp, and factory harness
If all else fails, search this site under "14-pin"--this car had the 14-pin harness connector common in the '89 and later (changed again, twice, since then), and the harness connections and pin-outs are the same for those years except as to some having more speakers. But be sure which connector you are tapping into with tyour Crutchfield kit--the pins are not the same for the amp as for the radio and vehhicle harness!
        email if I help further

new problem, I think the amp is not working correctly, I get no sound from the door speakers, front or rear I believe, or the rear deck speakers, just from the front dash speakers. If I buy this harness I guess its not a problem though because it completely bypasses the amp, correct? How will the new harness get signals to the other speakers without going through the amp though? If I understand this all correctly, the signals for everything but the two front dash speakers go through the amp and then to the speakers, yes?

Jag: all four speakers being out is more likely a wiring problem. Check the connections all the way along from the din cable at the back of the radio through the 14-pin plug at the output side of the amp.
Is this a new sypmtom, or has it been that way since you got the car?
If it's been that way snce you got the car, check and see if you have speakers! you may have been had on the trade, when the PO took out his aftermarket units and put the original head unit back in?

Re the new unit--the amp is usually built into the aftermarket units, rather than separate in some Volvo units; that's why you can bypass the OEM amp with the aftermarket harness plug.

The first problem is the speakers are 8 ohm, try to power these. The dealer will sell you a refurbished fact. unit $350. If you install a new cd player it will not drive those speakers, they are set up to power 4 ohm. There is a wiring and dash adapter just check around at the better shops.
