What's wrong with my M41? 140-160

I'm having some problems with my M41 in my 1971 142e. I'm having a very difficult time getting it do shift into 1st gear when I'm stopped. It's really weird, every other time I stop my car I just can't get it into first gear without pushing the clutch 2 or more times. My clutch is adjusted correctly and there is NO grinding what so ever. Even when I match RPMs when coasting it doesn't wanna get into gear. is my first Gear Synchro gone? my tranny has 144K miles and I've changed the oil regularly. thanks,

Bryan

Does it shift ok with engine off?. If so clutch might not be releasing due to warpage, diaphram spring or cracked fork, try over adjusting to see if it makes a difference.

Can't say for sure, but it's probably not the synchro ring itself. There are three sliding bars that must stay keyed in slots in the synchro ring, and they are held there by two spring wires inside the synchro assembly. The wires wear down, allowing the bars to drop out of the slots.

If you take the top cover off, you can check for this. You should not be able to turn the synchro ring more than a few degrees with your fingers. If you can, something of that sort has happened.

Shortly after I'd bought my Amazon I had the same problem for a few weeks. Then it largely disappeared, although it was never again easy to select first gear from standstill, especially with a cold gearbox. I drove like that for more than two years.

This year I rebuilt a M40 and swapped it for the tired one. I opened the old 'box and found that one of the detents was chipped. That's probably what had caused the difficulty with selecting first gear. Though worn a bit, the synchromesh ring wasn't too bad.

        dd131,
That's good to hear. My good wagon has been having first gear trouble lately.
By detent, do you mean the circlip or the little dogs shaped like Volvo 240's?
        Thanks,
        S.

I couldn't get my 544 into first standing.

It turned out that the pilot bearing was rubbing on a dust seal and transfering just enough torque to defeat the syncros.
