First Volvo: A dud or deal? 200 1981

Someone is selling a 1981 DL 4 door with 144,000 miles. The automatic transmission doesn't move in reverse if the accelerator pedal is pushed. Otherwise, supposedly it works well. I haven't test driven it, but there were no leaks under the car when I looked. The owner bought it from a mechanic 8 months ago; the tranny died (details unknown) so he replaced it with a junkyard tranny, which supposedly had this problem ever since. Should I run?

I think Jobber and NewSomewhat are either the same person or are looking at the same car. (there's a post by newsomewhat re: buying an '81 Dl 244 with 144k)

Does he have good maintenance records? Pass on ANY car that old that you don't know for sure has been maintained well.

And what is the rest of the car's condition? Figure out what the car would be worth to you in its condition, subtract the cost of a tranny rebuild (call around, different regions vary considerably), and that should be your top price.

Can't the brake bands/clutches in an auto. tranny be adjusted?
Also, the problem might just be a mis-adjusted shift linkage, or
low fluid level (some people don't know how to check AT fluid).
If the price is a few $100, and the car has no rust/runs well, get
it. I paid $1200 for my brick with 145,000 miles, and had to
put another $1000 into it, so even if you need a replacement
tranny, your costs won't be out of line. Another option: convert
    to a stick.

No bands to adjust. And when the clutches wear out (which is easy if the fluid has never been changed), you need to replace 'em.

Back to the original post ... how's the fluid level? If that checks out and there's still no reverse, then it definitely a physical problem. Unless the vehicle rest of the vehicle is in very good shape and is a real bargain price, I'd pass otherwise.

It depends on the price and the condition of the rest of the car.
