engine quits when high beams on 700

I just purchased a 89 740t(bosch) that has been converted to na. When I put, or flash) the high beams on it quits , and restarts only when the lights are returned to low beam. I once looked at a car that had the same problem a few years ago, is this common? Can anyone direct me in the direction of the problem(I assume it's a bad ground)BTW it still has the balast resistors for the injectors ant the under hood layout is like a 740 t (battery on drivers side, still uses the intercooler, but has a b230f out of a 86 740)

Thank You

First thing to check is the multiple ground point on the left hand inner fender shown in the pic below.

What happens is this, the metal strip which the ground connections plug onto develops a high resistance connection to the body.
This allows the ground wires to rise above 0 Volts under heavy load.
The ignition power stage (aka ignition amplifier) grounds to this as well and eventually the voltage applied is insufficient to run the P/S and the spark stops.

Here is some ground info Joe gave me for my 86 740t:

To start, I believe there should be a grounding area on left inside side panel,(will have ignition ECU grounded here) definitely one next to FI ECU on rt side panel. Remove instrument cluster(2 hidden screws behind pop off covers ) follow black wires from cluster.I think there is another ground area next to relay/fuse cluster area. Inside engine compartment- front left side near charcoal cannister, left headlight( this is a high failure area). Firewall ground strap to valve cover.

Not sure if this will help you at all. I wasn't exactly having the same problem as you but it was similiar.

    Good Luck,

    Anastasia
