I recently picked up a very nice set of 740 Nova wheels. Any problem with running these on my '69 145? I have seen spacers advertised, are these only necessary for FWD wheels?

Our '72 145 has had a variety of wheel and tires. I have run 760 turbo wheels with 195/55 on the front car hunts all over the road, 760 195/60 steers very good. MSW 15 (wide) 195/ hunts a little, MSW 205/55 hunts a little more and you have no neet to go to the gym for upper arm work out. All of them limet your crusing speed to 55-60 due to rpm noise, with 4:10 and no OD. No rubbing with any if you roll the rear fender lip.
The 122 with 205/70 and 4:56 and OD 75-85 mph is fine.

Tom,
I had some 14" 'Virgo' knock-offs, or perhaps they were factory, I have never known. Anyway, they look nice and I wanted to put them on my 71 142E.
I took them off a 240 and put them on and they would not turn when bolted on due to a direct collision with the brake caliper on both front and rear. So, since I was SURE that they would work, I was stuck with new tires mounted on them and some cheap steel wheels with hubcaps for my winter 83 244 with new tires also..
I was so sick of the 'bug' tires on my 142 and the way it handled, I went ahead and put 14" stock steel 240 wheels with late model hubcaps on it.
I am on a budget and had already invested in new tires mounted on them and had no other car to put them on. I had 4 new 14" low profile tires. 205/60/14 Goodyear Eagles, originally intended for the 244.
Anyway, this drastically increased my RPM's at 70 mph, even in Overdrive.
I should NOT have put 14" wheels on it.
It looks really nice and is lower to the ground and FUN at low speed, but I think that it was a mistake on my part.
There are great 740 alloys available.
In fact, I think that I would offer a trade to anyone in New england:
My 14" Virgos with good tires, less than 5000 miles + some Cash from me
In Exchange for some 15" (or 16") Volvo wheels from a 740 or 940
Any takers?

My car originally came with virgos on it, and if you look at it, you will agree, it looked awesome. (www.cardomain.com/id/kneedsacar) The thing was, it had two different sized tires on it when i got it and i was told that the smaller ones were the right size... What a load of bs that was way wrong. They were 195/60/14. So i bought some new ones, and loved the way my car looked and handled, but it was always reving higher than it should for just going with traffic... As it turns out, these tires were almost two inches smaller in diameter than the originals... My speedo was WAY off. I went a "read" 112 mph at 6000rpms in 4th gear with those wheels... Which i think was actually about 102 or something. I don't remember, but I could find out on that site i always recommend,(http://gs.tolan-hoechst.com/tirecalc.htm) its awesome. I was soo pissed off when I found that out, spent $300ish for new tires, and they wouldn't work on my car. So i tried to sell them at the IPD garage sale, to no avail. Even with "drastic price drops" lol. So at the endo of the meet, i was pissed off, and traded them for some 740 turbo rims. I didn't care at the time that all of their tires were bald, and FAILED to realize that one of them didn't match the others. I got JIPPED HARDCORE on that trade, and am quite pissed to this day...
Good luck with selling them, I still have my unmatching wheels with bald tires, and they are NOT on my car like i wish they would be. But they don't look that great, and my Virgo rims were much better, and they had new tires on them... Damn
Peace,
Kyle

The 14" in the pics are Corona wheels. The Virgo's are 15", 5 spoke. See
http://brickparts.d--r.com/wheels/index.htm for reference.
BTW, which rim are you missing or mismatched? If there's one I can think of that Volvo offered two finishes on one style, it's the Nova's - silver painted and machined/clearcoat.
-- Kane ... who definitely needs to pare down the "collection" of 26 extra rims in the backyard. :)

I didn't mean to come off confusing, but at the same time, i wasn't trying to be really clear either... ;-) Ya, I know the 14s are the Virgos, lol, didn't mean to say/sound otherwise. They are what my car came with, and i traded them for some Novas. Three of them are the newer style ones with the machined face, the fourth, is the older style nova with the "not machined" (painted along with the rest of the wheel) face... Did you say you might have one laying around? I have a set of VERY nice 14" steel 240 wheels with VERY nice factory hubcaps on them, i wouldn't mind getting rid of them, either by trading or sellin, i have no use for them whatsoever, and would love to get rid of them, as long as i'm getting something in return... :-)
Peace,
Kyle

No, you still mean the 14" Corona's. :)
Go fig that the Nova rim I recently repainted over was the machined/clearcoat variety. Sorry! The clearcoaat was peeling badly anyways, though.
At least on mine's, the machined variety was manufactured in 83, the silver painted one in 84. The latter ones used plastic caps (that faded), instead of the earlier stainless steel variety.
Since this is the one style I'm short one rim on, I'm still on the lookout in the SoCal junkyards. So I'll give you a heads up if I locate one.

-- Kane ... and if you're wondering, the front of my 245 is on Corona rims.

So the early Nova's had the machined face? And the 84 and newer ones had the painted face? hmm, so, in that picture u have there, that is a machined face wheel that was painted over? If so, i think it looks good enough, maybe i'll just repaint all four wheels, and they will match enough... But i'm still worried about the straighter/sharper edges of the machined face wheels.. Won't it look funny? or should i do a bunch of coats. Did you add clear coat on them? What type of paint did u use? Thanks,
Kyle

Yes, that was a repainted machined one. And I think they'll match enough. Still, if you want to hold off, until this weekend (after finals!), I'll check the local yards down here. One you do paint 'em, there's no going back.
I primed and used 3 coats of Rustoleum Charcoal Gray (or at least I think that was the color) - no clear coat. The color will conceal brake dust very well. :)
Not that it'll matter now, since I picked 5 Virgo's recently. Those have all been repainted too, though I used Aluminum Metallic + clear coat for the finish.
Not as nice as bead-blasted and powder-coated, but for less than $10 invested, they come out alright.

Sweet, sounds good man. I wasn't going to paint anything yet though anyways, :-), cause my car and ALL(8) of my EXTRA wheels, are in it down in Salem, and I'm already up in Portland for my break. My finals were last week :-P... Don't worry about finding anything at the local yards for me, that's ok, i'll just deal with what I have, unless you find some great wheels at GREAT deals, and maybe i'll be able to use some christmas money... Hah, "wheel" see about that. Thanks though! Peace,
Kyle - back in p-land - and sad because i don't have my car with me, cause INSURANCE, and MONEY, and FIRST gear.... Oh well, its ok... I can wait for my baby...
BTW where are you located? Because if shipping is involved, don't bother, much too spendy...

Kane,
I have 14" Virgo "styled" wheels. These are 14 inch, not 15. A photo that shows them is at:
http://webpages.charter.net/morda/volvos.jpg
It is not a good shot, but the Virgo style is clear. I also viewed the webpage that you referenced in your post and they are almost identical to that photo. They are alloy and were painted silver when I bought the car. I do not think that they are factory, but they look damn similar to the 15" OEM Volvo wheels. They have different center caps, solid plastic black ones that push in and have a strange insignia on them in white lines.
14" Virgos exist.
Thanks,
Jeremy

the ones in the picture with your cutie daughter on the trunk, those are 14" Virgos? Is that a stock turbo car? didn't it come with 15" ones?
|
|
|
Yes,
Those wheels on the car are definately 14". Yep, that is my daughter. The next car over is my 71 142E.
These wheels look like Virgos, as you probably notice. The car is an 83, but not a Turbo. The logo was stuck on by someone before I bought it.
I bought it 6 years ago as it looks today.
I do not know if it ever had 15" wheels.

Wheels will stick out more, so don't go with too tall a tire. My experience was that the rear would rub the outer fender on a large (speed) bump. I was running 205/70/15 (on Rigels) ... I'd say 205/60/15 max.
Otherwise, go for it!
-- Kane ... who's still one Nova rim short of a complete set.

Agreed. These wheels should be no problem at all, well, if u use the right tire size. I'd say that the 205/70 is a bit big because it is even taller than the stock wheels, and they are pretty tall if you ask me... I recomend the 205/60s presonally, or for a *little *more accurate diameter, 195/65s, which is what i have currently on my car...
Best of wishes,
Kyle
|
|
|
Yes, the 205/70/15 was tall, but it was what I had at the time. For a while, I was sharing tires between two vehicles. :)
A 205/65/15 is closer still, being a tad bit on the larger side. 195/65/15 runs a slight bit smaller, with 205/60/15 being smaller still. Original diameter is about 25.4", give or take depending on tire manufacturer.
FWIW, my '74 is currently running 195/70/14's on Riken rims.

yep yep, I think its an annoying size... Haha, well, here is a site for everybody's wheel and tire sizes questions, I've posted it b4, but it can always be of help. http://gs.tolan-hoechst.com/tirecalc.htm
Good luck,
