I need to replace the shocks on my 92 960 Wgn. How do I know if the springs also need replacing? What about a shock recommendation. I really don't need a performance shock just one to put things back to good running order. Thanks

The 960 station wagons don't have IRS but it is possible they still have Nimovat shocks. If the wagon does have Nivomats you have to replace with the same. I would check out FAQ to see what information is available on changing out the springs and replacing with different shocks. The springs must be changed if you put on a different type of shock other than Nimvomat if that's what is on the wagon.

Have someone else drive it by a bupy road & watch the action see if the tires bounce uncontrollable,,or do they have minimal bounce,,,

Replace springs only if they sag enough to cause differences in ride height as measured at the jacking points.

I think that all 960's have IRS which means that you have Boge Nivomats. There are no other "drop-in" replacement shock other than another Boge Nivomat. BUT you can do a mod to convert the system to use a regular shock. If you are interested in this conversion then the info can be found in the FAQ under the features menu.

However if you have a live axle or want some ideas for brands to use in your conversion then read on:

You can tell if the springs are cooked on a live axle set up if your wagon back end sags with no weight in the back. If you are looking to carry any heavy weight in the wagon, it might be a good time to replace the springs on your car with overload coils in combo with new shocks to increase your hauling cap. by 200-300lbs. At any rate, if you replace the springs, make sure to buy ones that are for "wagon only" since they are stronger than the ones for the sedan.

The shocks that I have used for replacement on a live axle setup found on my 744 are the KYB gas-a-just shocks. They work relatively well but are a little hard at first. Others on the board will recommend Boge turbo's or a Bilstein variety. From what I hear, both make great shocks but they pricier than KYB.
