Water heater valve

Anyone have any tips on removing the heater valve on a right hand drive
'91 740 estate non aircon type? (Water valve inside car). It's covered by a
mess of plastic control parts which I assume come off the actual valve part.
The one on my '89 only has one cable to the valve arm. Also, does it have to
be turned to line the lugs up to pull it out and is there a trick to doing that? I can remember having a hell of a problem getting one out of my 240.

This is tangential to your post but the other day a coolant valve went on my 1990 740 left hand drive with A/C. According to the 700/900 faq, the location is different in that car than in yours. Non-A/C cars get it inside the car. In mine, it is on the engine side of the firewall underneath and back of the intake manifold. The valve cost $100 Canadian at the Volvo dealer and it took the garage about 1 hour total to repair it. I would have done it myself but it snapped just as I was pulling in to a garage to get new tires. Geech, you would think it was the family dog going to the vet (wets himself either out of fear or protest - not sure which).

The faq recommends replacing it every 10 years or so (I think) or if the car overheated at any time. Mine did 2 years ago. I was very lucky to have it go at a garage so that the coolant leak was evident. Had I been on the road, I am sure I would have toasted the engine. Should install that idiot light mentioned in the faq. I would have been really peeved if I had damaged the engine because I just sold a perfectly good extra car I had been tripping over for the past year. Lucky...this time.

ok i have actually done this job...

I had to SMASH mine out...then cut one of the retaining clipa off the new one..

You rotate it (i think clockwise) about 45 degrees..then pull it towards you to remove it from inside the car (having removed the pipes first - note put LOTS opf cloth under the internal pipe as it spills water/antifreeze all over the carpets!) but you CANT do this without removing the entire pedal box assembly (at least on a manual)...

so either remove the entire pedal box assembly...or lever/smash it out then cut the offending projection off your new one and secure the new one in with a rubber grommet/jubilee clip in the engine bay...

if you havent got the new valve - looking at it helps to see whats going on...

its a bear of a job i would say budget 5-8 hours if oyur going to do it right removing the pedal box and you NEED two people for some of it!

one a left hand drive it guess it would be 1-2 hours....

managed to get the one out of my parts car without having to remove anything else. I did this as a "dress rehearsal". Once its out it's really easy to see how to do it, but the position you have to get into to do it !!!! I'm still aching. The real one may take a little longer due to the extra levers around the valve, but I feel a lot more confident now. The one in the parts car looks brand new, so I'm tempted to fit that and see how long it goes for. I could go round peoples Volvo's doing this for a small fee ;) Took me 20 minutes to pop off the parts car one, most time was taken trying to line up the lugs, felt a bit like a safe cracker there. Also forgot to drain the system when pulling off the hose. Ever tried to get your head out from under the pedals and up the reclined seat while lying on your back in a hurry? You can't. Antifreeze makes a fine hair gel.

Sorry, all my manuals show only LHD and it appears to be a straightforward case of clamping the hoses and pulling out the valve.

Well, I got the leaking heater valve out of the car and found it is an "updated" type. Identical to the older type except for the valve arm which has a peg sticking out of it and is slightly longer than the older one which just has a small hole in it that the cable fits in. Phoned my local Eurocarparts place, and found that a replacement is £50 (includes taxes and delivery). I've placed a small towel up under the mount for the valve, even though the leak is minimal (small bead appearing every few minutes with engine running) until the part arrives which should be Wednesday.
I was looking at the FCP Groton site you U.S. guys have, out of curiousity and found that the price there is $14 !!!!!! Even if that is the older part, that still costs £25 here without adding tax or delivery. We may be able to buy Volvos a lot cheaper secondhand, but we pay for it with parts !!!!

      $14 = £8.12
      £50 = $86.08

For more or less the same part !!!!!
