my car died on me..help!!! 900

hey guys,,

I need help...my car suddenly died on me on the road today....I got it to re-start with no problem and then after about 5 miles...it died again. I went and parked on the side of the street and checked the engine...nothing visible..started it and it started idling rough...then died...I gingerly drove it home and the car made it...but it still sounded like the car was going to stall when it's in nuetral..the RPM was going up and down...so i took off the IAC motor..sprayed throttle body cleaner and i'm ready to test drive the car...anything else i need to check..could it be the fuel pump going bad? thanks.
yeah, i test drove the car after cleaning the IAC motor and I didn't even make it but about 3 miles away from my house and the car quit on me..tried to re-start but wouldn't at all..so I waited for 5 min..then restart and it fired right up..took it back to my house...check the idle and the idle was fine..so i place the car on drive and ..bam..there goes the idle...up and down..then the car died..so is this a classic fuel pump or relay failure...hoping it's only the relay and not the pump...

    update... 900

    well,

i went outside and i got my wife to turn the car ON...without starting it..I listened for the main pump and it made that whirring sound which means it's good..then i took the gas cap off and listened for the in tank pump and that too made thw whirring sound which means it's good...so...my question is..could the relays be bad and the pumps still comes on..or it doesn't matter if the realy s are good or bad..the pumps still come on? thanks... also, last night when i was letting the turbo cool down...i accidentally turned the ignition the wrong way and it made this squealing noise..since the car was already on..could this even has anything to do with my car stalling?

The failure of the relays is heat related. The electrons are trying to cross a soldered terminal that has failed and as they get madder and madder they get hotter and hotter causing the crack to wider and wider until the electrons just quit. Alot of folks carry a spare FPR just for this occasion The failure of crank positioner sensor is also heat related, but you'd have to replace it. The diagnosis is in the FAQ.

You have heard the most awful noise in the world, turning the starter switch on while the car is running. Bet you don't do that again. By doing so, you had tried to engage the starter gears with the flywheel gears when the fly wheel teeth are moving faster. Most auto manufacturers allow you to do this once without too much damage. It has nothing to do with stalling, just starting, if you chewed the gears too much.

The very first thing to do is resolder the fuel pump relay and radio suppression relay...

For relay locations, go to the 700/900 FAQ, and look up Electrical. Then find Relay Locations. Your 940SE is like the 1988+ 760T and 960s for relay locations. The FI relay is relay B in the attached picture. The FAQ has a drawing.

The Radio Suppression Relay is black, and is mounted on the bracket for the power steering reservoir along with an identical relay which operates the electric engine cooling fan.

..thanks for all the response...i'm just glad that it sounds like the relay is the problem and no the fuel pumps..will check it out tom.. and give everyone an update...oh one thing...after sitting for almost 5 hours..i tried to start the car and it fired right up..i then shift it to drive and the idle held steady...weird...didn't try to drive it for i was afraid it would stall on me again...wish me luck.

The fuel pump relay is white and is located behind the ashtray. The radio suppression relay (which controls power to the injectors) is black, underhood, and mounted near the right shock tower.

You'll find abundant details in the BB "FAQs" section. This has been repeatedly covered since the beginning of time.
