installing a used windshield 200

The glass shop here told me that the used windshield I had (which I pulled out of an '82 240)didn't fit in my '79 and they even showed it to me 'installed' with a gap between the chrome trim and the body. They sold me a new windshield and installed it but now I found out that the volvo 240 windshields were identical for years if not through the entire production of the 240 series. I think I was taken for a ride by the glass shop but I could also just be a victim of their ignorance(and mine).
I'm interested in learning more ie: whether the clip kit cannot be used, if it's possible to lay the windshield in and make it look as if it doesn't fit for a customer, etc.
thanks

Yep, you were taken. It's not a tight fit. There'll be a bit of space around the glass. I've moved windshields from one car to another and reused trim no problem as long as butyl tape is used.

But, if the shop used urethane (from a caulking gun) which is likely since that's what new cars need, inslalling the clips may be hard. I left off the clips and trim when I replaced my windshield because I couldn't find any butyl tage at the autoglass places here. I filled in the space with caulk. I might try sticking the trim to windshield one day.

Yeah I just read about that somewhere...maybe here... I think they used the same windshield for all the 200 series.

I would think you were taken for a ride....

Depending upon the thickness of the butyl sealer tape used around the window - a shield can sit lower or higher.

Keep the used shield - you will need it some tim ein the future.

Clips can be reused... The last time I had a glass shop help install a used shield - the owner showed me a trick...

Have an old blanket on the hood..

On a hot day - let the car sit facing the sun - this softens up the butyl sealer tape...

Then I went into the front seat, and put my feet up onto the glass, and gently pushed - the glassman was outside with an Olpha knife, trimming off any stringy butyl caulking...

The entire shield and chrome trim came out together.

Now that the shield was out of the car, we transferred the chrome and clips over to the shield going in.

The butyl caulking tape was set into the recess in the windshield frame, then the entire unit - glas, chrome, and clips together, was lowered into place.

Only about 3 clips were broken in the refitting process, and they were very old and brittle...

Best part - he only charged me $20, instead $200 new shield price....
