wet back floorboards 200

My daughter's 1988 Volvo 240DL is now in Biloxi, Mississippi instead of Washington. With all the rain down there she is having problems with the rear floorboard getting wet, especially the passenger side. (My son-in-law is in the Marine Corp. down there.) They don't think that it is the door seals. Where do I have him start looking?

While you are checking the rocker panels you might want to check the back seat floorboard wells. This past weekend while replacing the transmission mount in my wife's 240 I noticed several small holes around the passenger side well. Yep it was rust. This in a car that has never been out side of Alabama (except for the first 5000 miles which were spent in Germany). The undercoating still looked solid, but evidently it is trapping water some how. I checked the rest of the floor pan and found no rust anywhere else.

and don't forget to check the exterior rear wheel wells. My '86 245 had several rust holes in there which allowed water spraying up from the wheels to flood the rear floor section.

figured this out after fixing my rocker panels/rewelding new floor metal in/extensive rust repairs/excessive cursing .... can't go on

good news is I'm now dry on the wettest of rainy days!

Just in case you wish to go one step more in the rear wheel wells.. From a pick a part, I grabbed 2 front fender plastic liners, and fit them in the rear wells..

I took pics, and these are amoung the last on page 3 here....

I was unable to get full 100% coverage, but after trimming and forming I used roofing cement between the ca and the plastic...

The pics show what was cut away, with the cut aways taped in place sort of... Mac

Reach under the car along the rocker and press along the seam between the floor and the rocker. If it's soft because of rust, you've found the problem.

The grill in front of the widshield directs fresh air and leaves, dirt, water down the side past the fresh air vent and down through the rockers to the rear wheel well. The stuff gets trapped in there and causes rusting along the seam. If the weep holes in the rockers aren't clear the water enters the cabin.

Pardon my ignorance. Rocker panels??? Would that be the 3" by 2" channel that runs down both sides of the under side of the car, about a foot in from each side?

Sorry about that. They're what BruceS says they are. I, myself, didn't know what they were called until a few months ago. I just knew what they were and that they were a major rust problem.

        John,

The rocker panels are the boxed in sections that are directly below the doors. They're the lowest and outer most portion of the body, there is a pinch weld seam along the bottom with four or five small drain slots that need to be kept clear.

Also if this car is a wagon, the rear side cargo windows are major sources of leaks that end up in the rear footwell.
