CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 200 1992

Hi all. This is a great site,I'm hear everyday and i love my volvos, alla 14 of them.Anyway my question is how do i check for what is trigering my check engine light? The car runs smooth, starts easy and everything works. It has 187k on it but it still looks new. It seams to have now power from a stop but that may be normal. V8 is in the near future if i can just decide on ford or chevy. I will do all the work myself, I have my own lift and every tool known to man, toolaholic. Thanks for all responces. VOLVO FOR LIFE,GASIT M.J.

    CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 200 1992

Bought my 89 245 (230K) about two years ago with 'check engine' lite on....swapped out the auto tranny for a M-47 (true 5spd) and liight went out after I reconnected everything. About a week later...lights back on. I have no lack of power...and have been getting 30- 31 MPG on trips and 27-28 bumping around town with 234K on odometer......not looking to fix whats not broke.

    I'd go for a Ford.....have seen them in many a 240.

    Enjoy,

      CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 200 1992

Sorry for the empty message above. I understand that a "light-on, but no real problem" condition is common to the legendary #561 ECUs installed on Volvo of this vintage. It's true of my '90 244 (wife and I get nervous when the light goes out!) and I've heard same from others on the board.

When you get a check engine light on the 2.2 or 2.4 system, the OBD will throw a code (actually that is what tiggers the check engine light). What codes does the OBD throw? Once you lokk that up, we have a more defined direction to solve the problem. Though the OBD-I is crude, it still helps in solving the puzzle.
