proper voltage readings 200 1979

Hi all, Does anyone know the proper voltage readings I should have in my 79 245dl? I have had it tested and was in the mid 13's. I am getting a very dim AMP light when headlights are on and a pulsating dim AMP light when the turn signal is on. I just replaced voltage regulator, battery cables, and had the alternator bearings replaced. any ideas? (I didn't have the signals or headlights on during tests) Thanks, Franco79..217k

Was the alternator diode pack tested when it was apart? A faulty diode wil give low output and a glowing warning light.
Also check the alternator ground wire for a poor connection.

Thank for the advice, I will find out if the diode was checked, I am sure the groung is good, auto electric shop added a new on. Is it expansive to have a diode replaced or should I just get a new alternator? thanks for responding, Franco79

Wire brush and or sand the bolt/screw contacts as grounds.... A finger print can stop the ground from beng a ground.. Once everything is working protect the connection with paint, spray wax, die-eletric grease and the like....

        Clean and shine the grounds....

With a meter take readings on the wires at the ALT if you wish.... The larger red wire should read battery volts engine on and off...

The smaller one should read dead off, and 1/2 Battery volts engine on....

14.2 is the ideal you are looking for... Mac

"I just replaced voltage regulator, battery cables, and had the alternator bearings replaced."

If you've replaced the voltage reg. you shouldn't be getting a dim amp light. Perhaps the contact points for the voltage reg. brushes are oily/dirty. Or your belts are a bit loose?

You've replaced the alt. bearings. Were they the source of the noise rather than possible loose belts or bad battery in a previous post? Don't overtighten the belts or you'll get premature bearing failure (alt., pump).

"I have had it tested and was in the mid 13's."

Get yourself a multimeter (cheap enough), and run the tests yourself. 13.5V is on the low side.

Thanks for responding, Quite possibly dirty, took a few trys to get it in, it might have touched some dirt or oil. I did buy the cheapest VR available. After I replaced that, I still had problems and took it to auto electrical repair shop. They replaced bearings..never had a noise, But I am sure that helped a little, I just made a 700 mile round trip journey w/o problems. Other than the dim light. My battery has stayed charged for more than 6 days, so that in itself is great. I had it checked during my trip, right before I departed to return home. I will for sure get a voltimeter this week. Thanks and take care, Franco79

At the battery with the engine OFF you should read 12.5, and with the engine at idle 13.8 to 14.6 depending on what is on.. With nothing ON 14.2 to 14.6.. Readings of 14.8 are ok, but no higher...

I think you have poor grounds at the main head lamps. You might want to clean the grounds on the fenders.... Mac
