Carbon under the valve cover? Varnish maybe, but carbon??????????? Black hard caked on carbon??? as in soot? Never seen it in a valve cover.....

Tan slime yes, varnish yes. Simple kerosene will wash that away..... Mac

Check it out at www.AutoRx.com and read (unbiased) stuff at www.bobistheoilguy.com

It's a non-solvent ester based oil system cleaner that actually works. Really great at freeing dirty piston rings and cleaning the sump. It's about as safe as it comes. I actually don't believe the hype about fixing leaky seals, though.

If there is I'd like to know about it. Remember that the underneath of the valve cover probably looks the same as the cap. When I was overhauling the motor I scrubbed the inside of the valve cover with a wire brush. Took ages to get it all off.

If anyone knows of an effective carbon cleaner I would love to have known about it 6 months ago.

Water vapour or water/methanol injection is gosh darn good at preventing combustion chamber carbon buildup (+ worth an extra 2 MPG as the system fitted to the Horst Wessel Battlebus is proving). Otherwise, good lube changed at sensible intervals is essential. Schnell, Schnell!

Regards,

Rich.
