whining/whirring sound (940 gle) 900 1991

I have only owned my 91 940 gle about a month. I have noticed that now and when I bought it I hear a whirring or whining sound that corresponds with the transmission.....is that noise a common transmission noise or is it possibly a bearing or the timing belt stuff? I have never owned a 940 before, only 240s and have never heard this noise. Any guesses? thanks so much. I am about to take it in to the dealer for service - it just turned 84,000 miles but i don't know if I want to wait until the 100K svc. to take it in.

thanks a ton,

My 94 940 does the same thing however it shifts excellently so I hope its the nature of the beast. I have only had mine for 2 months and it has 75,000 miles on it so I'm no expert on these matters. JJ

You are both talking about 16 valve (B234) engines right? One possibility is that the noise is coming from the balance shaft belt. This is located at the front of the engine towards the bottom. Remove the timeing belt cover for access. Try listenting to the idling engine with the cover removed to see if this is the source of the noise.

There is an idler pulley on an eccentric mount that adjusts the tension. You could try decreasing the tension slightly, bit by bit until the noise level decreases to an acceptable level. I don't suggest loosening the tension too much - to eliminate the noise completlely, but a little loosening will reduce it to a level where you can't hear it much from the cockpit.

I don't believe that to be my problem. My only make the whirring sound when trans is in gear. It follow the speed of the transmission. JJ

That is just the sound of the 940 with the B234 engine. It sounds much different than a 240. I'm at 173k and it's not a problem. Just make sure you change the timing belt on time, and every 2nd one also change the tensioner. I had a non-dealer do the belt, and he didn't know about the tensioner. It froze and the belt jumped, but I was lucky and it didn't do any damage.
