I found this little article years ago and forgot where it was but, I remember the gist of it.
A reliable way to mount badges on the grill.
Take a regular sized soupcan lid and if it has rough edges, smooth them out or get a canopener which makes smooth cuts. Drill two holes in the back and braze or weld two threaded studs or shallow-headed bolts to the back long enough to go through the grill at about 1" from the outside edge of the lid opposite of each other.
Paint the back with some sort of primer or other rust inhibiting paint. (black was prefered by most though some liked silver) Glue your badge so it will be at the correct angle on the grill when mounted. Use another painted lid, (both sides this time), or piece of aluminium or whatever which will not rust as a washer on the back of the grill and bolt it on using washers and nuts which will not rust and will lock the nuts on. (If you use another lid, you will need to drill two holes in it to match the first.)
This get up seemed more work than it was worth but, the pictures of the completed project looked very proffesional! Also, if your grill gets messed up, you can move your badges to the new one easily.
Just something i filed away from long ago.

Have you thought of putting it on the dash, in that space where the tacho should be?

Well, I have since added a tach, so that isn't an option.
Anyway, I want to show this off to the outside world!

Dylan, if this is any interest. I thought this was cool!

First off Congratulations! I've glued my 100k mile badge to the grille, and in about 7k miles I plan on glueing the 200k m badge there. My grille looks almost like a trophy case. I've been cruising around and have seen plenty of Volvo's with the badges on the back near the lic. plate, which still looks cool. You can at least look at something when your following. I also agree as someone else mentioned as getting all the badges your Volvo has worked for, so request them all.

Impressive, My car's odometer shows 88,000 kms, although the speedo was disconnected for a while so it's more like 100k. That's 62,000 miles. Good to know I've got a bit of life left in it.
Reason it's so low is because it was my dad's work van. As a filmaker and later TV ad man, it only went on serious trips maybe one day a week with a load of camera equipment. The rest of the time it was just doing short trips around the city, nothing further than about 10-20 kms at a time. Both my parents work from home so no commuter driving. City driving is hard on cars though. We replaced clutches in both our 240s.

I put the 200,000 badge next to the rear license plate on my 740t and think it looks great. It's been on there a year and, so far, no one has tried to swipe it. I'm going to put the 100,000 mi badge that just arrived for the 242 in the same place.
Someone suggested using a magnet to mount it so it could be removed easily if parked in a sketchy area.

As far as I know it is the highest mileage car on the board...
I'm starting to rack up insane miles again... My daily drive these past few weeks has been about 120 miles round trip... It's 90% highway driving, so I'm not working the car to death... yet...
70% (or so) of the miles came from my dad when it was his daily driver. He had a daily drive of about 150 miles for many years. Had to have the transmission replaced once.
It's funny... When I was going through the records of the car the other day, I found the first reciept from when the family first got the car back in '88... It was the "Buyers Inspection." The mileage listed on the reciept was shown at 94,000 miles... I really can't imagine my car ever having under 100,000 miles...
I keep the oil changed every 3000 miles, with out exception, although I think I have a leaking seal somewhere...

There was a post a few months ago by a party in Californian with about a 1985 modle year 245. The poster stated the car had over 800,000 miles and had never had internal engine work or had to be towed. If true, that is very impressive.

First of all, congrats on breaking 400,000 miles!
My '88 244DL that I bought new in November of '87 just clicked over 433,000 on the way home from work today. I'm so appreciative of all the info posted on this board - my knowledge has increased tremendously. Change the fluids - the three most important words for longevity. I've used Castrol or Valvoline 20/50 from day one and changed every 3,000 miles here in Southern Cal and I think it has helped.
Stormie '89 765T (234,000 miles) + '88 244DL (433,000 miles) and no stinking badges!

Wow, I haven't seen anyone else post with more miles on their car then mine!
I'm not that far behind you though... I'm at 417K now... just about to roll over to 418K...
I'm fairly sure you and high have the 2 highest mileage cars on the board then.
Anyhow, apply for the badges man! They are free. Why not?

So I don't think he'll be setting any records.
But he always starts and the AC even works!

I'm guessing you commute to New York and back every day! How did you rack up the miles? Where in SoCal. I'm here in Fountain Valley.

Actually, it was parked for over two years, as I had a company car. I have put most of the miles on while traveling within a four county sales territory. I currently commute to Laguna Hills from Temecula every day.

That's great! I'm still waiting to get my first one....by the time it gets here I'll probably have 300,000.

That is terrific! You must be treating it very well. I am looking forward to putting the mere 200,000 miles badge on mine sometime before the end of 2004. Hope I can double that mileage someday like you did.
Several options on where to put it. After having the first 100,000 mile badge literally ripped off the grille, I put its replacement one to the left of the back licence plate. It fits well there, others can admire it while behind me in traffic. The 200,000 on the other side will balance it out well. If you do not already have them, you should be able to request the 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 badges also

Well, by the time your cars are my '80s age, you'll be at 400K as well.
|
|
|
I hope so! I'm putting about 25K/year on the 245 so I should be at around 280,000 this time next year. The only major problems with it has been a computer failure at 125,000 and two issues with the rear-end. It started howling really bad and re-built at 90K and when it started doing the same thing at 150K I had it replaced with a good one from a salvage yard. The orignal must have had some kind of flaw from the factory.
