broken GLT-please help!! 200 1982

well, much to my likeing i bought a 1982 volvo last night from a neighbor. i drove it to school this morning and and when i went out at lunch(four hours after i arrived at school), it refused to start. i worried about it for a while, then went out after school and tried it again, same result, no starting. called mom and she took me home, waited for dad to come home and then left again to try to get it to start. we had the batteries connected for about 15 mins and tried it prolly 50 times, all it would do was click at the starter, nothing more. i just got home again, and have basicly decided that im gonna need to take it to a shop. i live in the suburbs of portland oregon and i want to know for all you volvo guys that live around here , or portland guys in general, where should i have it towed to? do any of you guys have a fav shop or something? and ideas on whats wrong? i just freaking got the car like 24 hours ago. ran fine both times i test drove it, ran fine all last night, ran fine to the school, then when i parked it (it on kind of a downward slope, would this effect anything?) it seemed fine. im sooooo mad right now.

any help is cool

CF

Clicking noise Indicates starter motor solenoid is activated, but does not crank the starter motor. This indicates following:

-No main power to starter motor (see comments other brickers)
-Starter motor brushes worn (tap with hammer might dislodge them)
-Solenoid fuber (engineering term for f*cked beyond repair)

I suffered the latter recently, this can be checked by measuring the starter motor side terminal for voltage when attempt to start. Solenoid can be purchased separately here in Europe $30 or so.

I have seen several starter motors fail in 240's. It is fairly common, but very easy to exchange for the home car mechanic. Whatever you do disconnect the batt before even touching the thing with a screwdriver.

PS Don't they teach you to use CAPITAL letters any more at school. In my time (no computer) that was considered important (correct spelling is not my strongest point though!)

Well dude...first of all, congrats on getting a very fresh car. As soon as it starts you are going to have years with a quality car. Second, a very reputable shop here in Portland Oregon is Alamo Volvo off of 69th and Glisan (503-408-1079). You find very fair prices, the best work, and the coolest guys around. Plus their turn around is pretty fast.

On to the no start problem...What exactly is going on? It kind of sounds like a bad battery. Sand down the inside of the battery terminals and try to jump the original battery and see if it starts. If it does start, you have a bad battery and should put in new battery terminals as well. If it doesnt start, write back and tell us what exactly it is doing (i.e. is it not getting fuel or not getting spark, ect, ect.)

We will get that thing running and looking good for ya

Check the ground connection from the battery to the body of the car. Also check for a ground strap from the engine to the body of the car. There may be more than one. It (they) will be flat braided cables if like a 740. Sorry I can't remember the location. Check the connection of the wires to the starter and the large cable attached to the back of the alternator (B+ contact).

Another Idea: Check to make sure the transmission is really in park or neutral. Try both. If the switch or transmission linkage is misadjusted, the transmission may be in gear, but the starter is engaging.

Good luck. You have found the right place if you intend to do your own maintenance.

    Dan

The number one cause of a non-start condition for 240s is the fuses, however, if you are hearing a click at the starter but it won't turn over, you should check the cables to the starter from the battery. You might want to throw another battery in there just to eliminate that as a problem.
