Rough Idle/start when engine heats up. 200 1993

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
Car starts normally on first start of the day and drives with no problems. After a few miles and stops, each start gets progressively harder and idles rough to the point that it will stall coming to a stop or surge several times and then smooth out. at it's worst it will start and idel rough until it shuts down. It all seems to get progressively worse as it gets hotter. After a few hours/over night of cooling it will start again with no problems.

I have checked the diagnostics and it has no codes.
Can the speed sensor be causing the problem? I did notice the black shielding on the wire is missing at the bend before the plug at the firewall.

Any help will be appreciated.

you might check the coil they are subject to heat failure, may not be it but worth a check, I've had them do that on other cars.

Had a simular problem on my 93 240. Turned out to be the bottom of the AMM to TB hose, about $15.00. Unbolt the hose and take it out for inspection. Very common spot is on the bottom where it is hard to see.
Also, this could be a common vacuum line problem. They are old and brittle.

All the speed sensor problems I have had have been with the car restarting when hot, never acutally failing when running. However, they are fairly inexpensive and not that difficult to change out.

If you suspect a sensor problem, do the ECU checks with the car warmed up. Another thing to remember on the 2.4 systems is that when you disconnect the neg bat cable for a while and then reconnect, the car take a few cycles to "relearn" the neutral idle setting. Idle cannot be adjusted manualy, the ECU handles that on the 2.4 system.

Also check for leaks at the intake manifold gasket. Won't throw a trouble code but will sure make her run bad. Just found that was the problem on my wife's '93 this weekend. $5.82 gasket at NAPA to fix.

Thanks for all the replies. I checked the coil and got 1.4 ohms Pri. The book says it should be 1.9 +- .1. Is the coil weak, and would it cause the problem when hot?
