alternator connections 200 1981

I just hooked up the new wiring harness last night, with the exception of the alternator connections. The thin red wire with the female spade does not have a corresponding male lead on the back of the alternator. I suspect that the alternator is some sort of after market replacement from PO. Where should I hook up this wire - to the same spot as the heavy red wire? If so, I will need to fabricate a male spade to ring connector adapter.

Thanks,
Jeff

Does your 81 have the regulator still in the circuit? Mine does and the wire is disconnected by the PO I suspect because its all frayed and missing its insulation. The corresponding male spade is recessed in a square hole next to and a little lower than the large lug connection. I didn't find mine at first either. Hope this helps... I started digging into mine because the battery light wasn't coming on when I turned the key to on, have to do some wire fixing.

      Chuck,

Thanks for the tip. I will try to look at this tonight. On this alternator, there are two large lugs, one w/red standoff, one w/black. I am guessing that the red one is where the large wire connects to. If there isn't a recessed area, where should this connect to?

      Jeff

Yes the spade output comes from the same 3 stator windings but has its own very small diodes. Don't know why the seperate diodes. You could crimp a male spade contact into and O-ring so the small wire would just plug in. Do check the back of the alternator real good with a hand mirror.
