240 cold start / idle problems 200

When I start my 240 cold, it often sputters and dies immediately after it turns over. When it dies, it turns over fine, but sometimes will die again. If it doesn't die again, it sputters and idels rough for about 30-60 seconds. After that, it idles fine and starts with no problem. I have changed the following (plugs, wires, cap & rotor, coil, PCV system, fuel filter). I have run a can of Techron through at highway speeds (although it probably could use a 2nd can), but have not cleaned out the throttle body yet.

I find that when it is about to die or is sputtering, if I just give it some gas, and it runs through it. The car also misses a bit at all engine speeds.

I am thinking of testing the following components: idle control valve, coolant temp sensor, knock sensor, throttle switch, and mass air meter (I hope it is not that!!!). Can anyone tell me if I am on the right path, or if they have ever had this problem??

THANKS

Hey, are you trying to steel my problem ;-) I just posted the same problem an hour ago. http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=677025

You're on the right track with the idle motor, AMM, throttle switch and throttle body. I'm not sure about the sensors though. Certainly clean the throttle body and make sure it's all adjusted correctly.

When you get the chance can you check your idle motor when the car is running and see if it clicks or vibrates? Mine doesn't seem to anything. It would make sense that the idle motor is the problem since the car can't idle at a constant speed.

As far as the missing at all engine speeds. Check the spark plugs. Mine was doing the same and after changing the plugs without much success, I thought it may also be the fuel injectors, fuel filter, air filter, distributor...So I checked and replaced a bunch of things and it still seems to do it.

    Good luck,

The missing could be a bad plug wire, check the idle motor and throttle body. Lots of questions answered here > http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EnginePerformanceSymptoms.htm

      Update...
In regards to the engine issing....when I unplug the electrical connection to the air mass meter, the missing goes away, but if I give it any gas or try to drive, it dies right away. Does this mean anything???

      THANKS!!!
