AC Cuts out above 45 MPH 900 1996

My 960's AC compressor cuts off above 45-50MPH on the highway, engine speed about 2400 RPM. The blower motor is fine, by the way. As a test I drove around the block in first gear at 3000RPM and the AC was cold, so it must be vehicle speed related.

Question is, why should the compressor operation be related to the vehicle speed and is there a way to solve this mystery? Thanks in advance.

Just a thought and I hope a more experienced AC person replies. There is a difference between driving at high speed and driving at slower speeds with the engine wound up in a lower gear. The ram air effect at high speeds would be very much greater than the air flow at slower speeds. Since, I believe, your car has an electric fan, the air flow is determined by the car speed, not the engine speed. This air flow over the AC condensor may trigger the AC cut-off, perhaps an icing condition.

This may be the dreaded 900 vacuum problem in the heater/AC vents, not a compressor outage. Try your 50MPH+ test again, but when the dash vent airflow dies, feel down by your feet where the airflow comes out when you select the "Floor" setting. On my 940, this is where the cold air detours when you use a lot of throttle or climb a hill. Both of these driving conditions yield low manifold vacuum. If you back off the throttle, even at high speed, does the cold air come back to the dash vents? If so, look up the 700/900FAQ for considerable discussion and a number of suggested cures for this rather common problem.

There's no loss of airflow whatsoever. I'm quite aware of that vacuum problem (had it in an earlier 960) but this one's strictly cooling from the AC system.

At first I thought it may have possibly been an overcharged R134 system but the low-speed, high RPM test didn't cause problems.

      A real puzzle, this one.

Check the voltage drop to the clutch. Also check the clearence of the clutch to the pulley. If more than .o2o remove front of clutch and remove the shims so that the gap is at .010. If the voltage drop is more than 2 volts you have a bad ground or a bad or broken wire to the clutch. If all that is not the problem add 4 oz. oil charge , the one with 3 oz of 134-a charge, if all that doesn't work I'm at a loss. Good luck.
