I Need a fuel distributer. Anybody got a used one???? 200 1979

I don't suppose anyone out there has a fuel distributor for a '79 240 series, federal issue b21? I can't find a used one and the new part is OUTRAGEOUS to buy.

Any aprticular reason why it was determined that it needed to be replaced? I have had a couple that seemed to be hopless causes (sitting too long with gas in them) that worked just fine after a disassemble/cleaning operation...

This is a favor I'm doing for a cash-strapped frien, actually. I bought this car asa parts vehile (new rack, good body) and he fell in love with it and resurected it. It's in the shop. Apparantly the unit has been "cleaned" before and worked fine for a year. I got the impression from my friend that the other shop might have just cleaned up the exterior of the unit and didn't re-build it. I'm wondering if you know how easy it is to re-build? O-rings and the like, or just cleaning? Thanks alot.

Whatever you do... 200 1979

...DON'T separate the top & bottom halves. Taking plunger out & cleaning etc. is OK. But its toast if you take it "apart".

It's not toast if you're careful, clean, and put everything back together the way it came out. I've done it twice and I don't consider myself a mechanical genious...

Plus, if the fuel distributor is indeed bad you really don't have anything to loose.

Justin

There are a few O-rings inside that, in my case, were re-useable but should be easily sourced locally - they are only O-rings. The main things are to:

- Don't damage any of the parts, especially the plunger.

- Keep everything extra clean.

- Put everything back where it came from.

I tore them apart, cleaned everything with Chemtool B-12, lubed all moving parts with ATF, and reassembled.

By just being careful, I've torn apart and cleaned out two of them (one on my 83 Turbo and one on a VW Sciroco) that worked fine after I got done with them. Just lucky, I guess... :-p

Good luck,

Justin

I have an FD18X, not used for some time... 200 1979

It's one I last used about 4 or 5 years ago, in a K-jet "Bench Test" setup I made to check out injectors, WURs, pumps etc. Doubt if I'll be doing much of that anymore. If you want to try it for shipping $, OK. Then if it works, pay me what it's worth to you. Fair enough?

Talk to stephan at VOLVOWORLD.COM. You have to speak with him though 'cause the distributor won't show up on the web site and the staff only sell the stuff on the site. He should be able to set you up for a reasonable price.

By "federal issue" do you mean "Except Calif."? If so, you're looking for an FD18X unit. George's 1976 (FD11X) won't do for a '79.

I'll check around my stash.

My mechanic and I crossed wires. I Now need a FD23X cal. fuel distributer. I ripped a FD out of my '76 and when he checked it- he said "this part is california, it won't work". what he meant was "this car is california..."
What I can't say is if the 23x and 18x will swap for one another? do you know?

I may be able to come up with one for a 76. Do you suppose it is the same?
No claims on the condition, but it appears to be OK. At least you could
work on one while the other one is in the car.

I don't think it works. They changed the mount in '77 so only 78 and 79 (non Cali) will work. I havent been able to find a reasonably priced used one- and time is of the essence. thanks for your consideration though.
