clutch cable needs repair/ prices/parts? 200

I have a 1986 240 DL, and my clutch cable snapped last night. I am looking around for the part, but i am wondering what is a reasonable price for this repair, and is there any way i could fix this myself. i am from pennsylvania, in a town where every mechanics favorite phrase is, "well, you know these volvos cost a ton to fix" i am really sick of this phrase as i know this car is the most practical car i could afford.

Yes, you can fix it yourself. Just get a new cable. (To get the old cable
fixed right will not be any cheaper and will probably cause additional
    headaches.)
Might be good for you to let us know where in the great Penn's Woods you are
so that folks from around there can direct you to a vendor close by.

You can get a clutch cable fron FCPGroton for $20 plus S&H. Here is a link to them:

I put a cable in my '86 240. It wasn't too hard except down at the connection to the throwout lever. You have to adjust the clutch cable to give as much slack as possible and I used a little PBlaster as a lubricant to get the little ball on the end of the cable to slip into the parts at the lever.

It's too bad some mechanics try to tell you that a price is high because it is a Volvo. I've found many Volvo parts are the same or less expensive than other makes. Of course, dealer prices will make you gasp! My son once had a Jaguar. The AC shop recommended a new AC compressor for $2000. Well the compressor is a standard General Motors compressor and could be bought rebuilt for about $200. In addition, he took the Jag to the family mechanic we trusted who told him there was nothing wrong with the compressor!

FCPGroton has the cable for about $25-30 as I recall. It is a very simple job once you get in the wheel well and can pin it to the pedal. Then, you have to be good with the cable adjustment at the tranny end. It takes me about 30 minutes, but I practised a while to hone my skills.
