IPD headliner kit or fabric store material? 700 1990

My 740 wagon headliner is shot. I see IPD has a headliner kit for $139.00 plus $22.96 shipping (to the NE coast)- total cost $161.96. Are the IPD kits 1/4" or 1/8"? I emailed IPD with the thickness question a week ago and they did not write back. That makes me think it is 1/4". Or would you recommend buying the fabric from a fabric store? I read in 700 FAQ that 1/8" is the way to go.

I bought 1/4" material and it worked out OK on the 740. Later I did another car and they were able to order some 1/8" material for me and drop shipped right to my door. Cost about $7.00 per yard, depending on quantity bought. The sunroof is a little tight, but works with 1/4.

I used 3M 8088 trim adhesive 2+ cans on the sedan. I used 3M double sided tape for the material on the sunroof. Worked like a champ.

IPD headliner kit or fabric store material - Seattle Area? 700 1990

Has anyone had this done is the Seattle area? My wife's wagon is needing this done, and I would like a reference for a place to get it done as I don't have the time right now.

I would suggest you also get prices from a local upholstery shop in your area. Im in NJ, and have had headliners installed locally for 250-300 dollars on 740 wagons with sunroofs. Once in awhile,it is cheaper in the long run to pay to have hard to do things done--and headliners with sunroofs falls under that category. If you do decide to do it yourself--Id look at alternates to IPD stuff--everything they sell is overpriced in my opinion. Good luck

In 1999 I agreed with a local upholstery shop that I would remove and reinstall the headliner and that they would reupholster it for USD 100 (including the sunroof which did not have to be removed - suburban Philly price).

Removing and reinstalling the headliner is an easy job which is documented in the FAQ if memory serves. Each takes about an hour. The board most likely will break at the level of the sunroof but the upholstery shop will stick it back together in no time (with duct tape in my case...)

      The final product was superb.
