rack leaking, any stop-leak worth using?? 200 1986

My steering rack recently started to leak. I was wondering if there is any type of stop leak that would help to revive the seals.

I have to agree with replacement (if it is truly the rack itself). It will slowly leak for a little while until the day arrives when floods of ATF at biblical proportions appear. Also, not to add to your misery, but check the ball joints and such. Faulty/worn suspension parts can tear a steering rack apart, as I learned on an expensive occasion after replacing again in a year's time. I was able to get mine replaced (rebuilt rack) and aligned for ~$500.00.

Coupla things while comtemplating how to bite the bullet:

1. Could the leak be the high-pressure hose? Does the fluid level drop when he car sits overnight? That would be the low-pressure hose, maybe. If no drop, check the high pressure hose. Turn the wheel while somebody watches.

2. Carry a couple quarts of ATF, and keep the reservoir topped up. Two quart bottles will fit in front of the battery and sit on the air intake hose. Be sure they don't sit on the a/c hose that's down there.

Good Luck,

Bob

Not really. You might stop the leak temporarily, but it will leak (guaranteed!) at THE most inopportune time (like January in a blizzard in a big way). Better to bite the bullet and replace the rack.
