If the OBD-I 'diagnostic' system can tell you which coil pack is bad, number the coil packs with a magic marker, 1 - 6 starting at the front. Switch the offending coil pack with another and if the code changes location, that's the bad one.

I did this with the '96 965, with OBD-II, that I have so I know this diagnoisis works.

If the car generally runs poorly, make sure the ground points inside the wiring harness low on the intake manifold are OK.

If you use the previously posted diagnosit technique, watch the inductive kickback.

Okay, try this... remove cover and pull suspected bad coil pack from the sparkplug. Lick your index finger and insert it where the sparkplug goes. Have your wife/and or girlfriend crank the engine over. If you get knocked on your ass from the shock, the coil pack is probably good. If you do not. Then the coil pack is more than likely bad. Be sure to check all six in this manner.....Good luck.

Should I make sure to take my shoes off and stand on top of the engine while performing this procedure:-)

Greetings again Robert,
I was just messing with you earlier man... I could not get to my manual at the time. The Chiltons manual(for what it is worth) to check the coil pack.
1. With ignition OFF, disconnet the harness from the ignition coil.
2. Place the leads of an ohmmeter across the leads 1 & 2 of the ignition coil. 3. Resistance should be approximately 1.0 ohm; if out of range, replace ignition coil.

Also to check the spark you can use an inexpensive spark tester (availble at your local parts store) Set the air gap as per the instructions with the unit. A yellow/orange color is a week spark, a blue color is strong.
1. Remove a coil from the head/plug.
2. Connect the coil to the spark tester then groung it to the head.
3. Crank the engine and check the spark.
Good luck, hope this helps.
later, Walt
