Rubber O-Ring on Top of Water Pump to Head is Dripping Anti-Freeze 700 1990

I hired a shop to install a new water pump with seals 7 months ago and it didn't leak anywhere until now. I read FAQ and understand the rubber O-ring seal on top of water pump requires upward compression of pump just before tightening bolts in order for it to seat snugly. Can I reseat upper O-ring without entirely removing pump?

Totally agree with the responses below that you need to R&R the pump with a new gasket set...and while you have it off you may find that the slow leakage at the rubber pump-to-head seal has resulted in scale formation in the recess in the pump that the fancy O-ring seats in. Carefully scrape this out to a clean surface or the leak will be back soon. Needless to say (but I will anyhow), the block and pump gasket faces must be absolutely clean of old gasket material or sealants. Takes a little more time, but as the old mechanic's saying goes: "If you haven't got time to do it right, how come you've got time to do it twice?".

Thank you for your help and advice! 700 1990

Thank you, all of you who responded. I appreciate all your great advice! I am going to replace the pump and seals. First I will read and study all of the information I have collected on Brickboard, then make sure I have all the correct parts and tools, and then do a D-I-Y'er water pump and seal swap.

the short answer is ....no....you cannot fix a WP leak at the gasket site without removing and replacing WP
i just installed a waterpump and there is a secret ...2 of the bolts are no-head and fit in oblong slots thru water pump...this affords you the ability to place WP on with gasket, and leverage it up and in ...i used my sister to leverage it up with a bar thru the pickup pipe on passenger side ( be careful ...soft metal)the heater tube is problematic too but is solved same way same time ...just pay attention even if you cant pay yer bills

You can try loosening the nuts, dropping the pump slightly, and re-compressing the rubber seal. However, by this time it may have taken a permanent set, so you may not accomplish anything. Worth a try, though. You may be able to find the seal separate from the pump. Another water pump will run you $35 or so from any of the online Volvo vendors.

FCP Groton lists the pump for $33 or the seal kit for $2.00. I'm about to do the same job for my 87. I think every one of my Volvo's has leaked here at one time or another. Maybe not the 91 yet... give it time.

If you slacken the pump and lever it upwards you may well damage the pump to block gasket.
There is a Scantec kit containing just the gasket and seals available, you should be able to get one from FCP or one of the other on-line suppliers.
Colin.

Keith, after reflection I'm with Colin on this. The likelihood of buggering both gaskets is too high. Get another gasket set (top rubber seal, back paper gasket, and rear o-ring) and reinstall the pump correctly.
