Hello to all
I am new to this forum but would just like to know if a b6304s from a 9** car could fit in my 98 740 gl and is this engine and tranny a good choice as I am going to convert (I might use a b230ft)
thanks
1989 740 gl wagon
Does anyone know 0-60 times on a 960 compared to a 740or940turbo
thanks

I think it would fit, but is probably not worth it. You'd have to figure out all the electronics. The AW30-40 is all electronically controlled. Also, all the electronics in the 960 are integrated (ECC communicates with the ECM, ECM communicates with the TCM, cruise control communicates with both the TCM and ECM.) The B6304 uses Motronic fuel injection instead of the LH system, so basically nothing transfers over. It would be a wiring nightmare, I think.

The B6304 is a sweet engine and I'd never own another red-block after having owned a white-block, but in your case, I'd go with a B230FT. I think there are too many "little" things that are different that will drive you crazy in the end (not to mention nickel and dime you to death).

Oh, and the center console would all have to be changed to fit the different shifter and to make room for the ESW switch. As would the driveshaft.

Can it be done? Yes. It probably wouldn't be too hard, since the 700 and 900 are so mechanically similar. Of course, you would need all the electronics, preferably the tranny (electronically controlled auto) too.

The NA inline six produced a smooth 201HP/166lb-ft (or 188HP/185lb-ft), but it's not known as a good off-the-line motor. The bulk of it's power is produced in the higher RPM range, making for excellent passing power on the highway. You could try to do a turbo setup, like the S80 has, but that would be a lot more work.

The B23(0)FT is a very robust, durable and inexpensive motor. Stock output is ~162HP, 180lb-ft. You can tune it over 200HP with very little money and effort. It is as simple a swap as you can get.

I would definitely choose the turbo motor. Stock 0-60 for a 960 was ~9.2sec. Stock 0-60 for a 740/760/940T was ~7.5 - 8.5sec, depending on model year, tranny and equipment level.

The 960 is really that slow? It feels much quicker than my 760T from a seat of the pants perspective. I was under the impression the 0-60 time for the 960 was ~8 seconds, at least on the early ones.

        Just looked it up - Road & Track test of a '92 960, 0-60 was 10.1 sec.

        For comparison (also R&T numbers):

        '91 940T did it in 8.9 sec.
        '91 940SE in 9.2
        '89 740T in 7.8
        '85 745T in 8.4

The 960 is much, much smoother, and the power is more linear, so it probably feels faster.

interesting...never realized it was THAT slow...

just out of curiosity, where were you able to find the numbers? is there like a database on the web or something for old performance numbers?
