speedo 900 1994

Two questions, lately it seems when I take off from a stop that my speedometer hesistates a little or is sluggish. The tach will go up to 1500-2000 before speedo engages. Any suggestions would be great. Also I know 940's are famous for having loose transmissions and I am wondering if there is anything that can be done with all the play in the gearshift, while in drive it will go forward and backward by as much as 1/2 in when moved. Is this related to trans mount (hard to replace), linkage, etc. Thanks in advance, Moles

The tranny mount is not hard to replace. I just did mine ('93 940) and it took about 20 minutes. Support the tranny with a bottle jack and 2x4. Remove the connection to the tranny, drop the cross member. Replace the mount (2bolts). Replace the crossmember. Bolt the tranny back to the mount and you're done.

I did this along with replacing the engine mounts. The improvement in engine vibration was wonderful!

Check speedo connections to the rear axle: may be loose.

The tranny mount can be replaced, as can the shifter bushings, to tighten things up. See the FAQ for instructions.

I the transmission being over loose a bad thing over time?

If the rear tranny mount is bad, the extra movement could wear on the motor mounts and the driveshaft's center bearing carrier, maybe even the u-joints. It actually is not a difficult fix at all.
