Separating bellhouse+gearbox from engine 900 1991

I am desparately trying to separate the bellhouse/gearbox from the engine (B21F) of my Volvo 940 (1991) to replace the clutch. I have read some of the comments at this website aboute renewing the clutch, but nobody seemed to have troubles to get the gearbox down under the car (I have to do the job without a proper bridge and with a provisional hoist).

Is there any trick to separate the bellhouse from the engine without destroying some of the vital parts?

Thanks for any suggestion!

Are you sure you have all the bolts out? Some are hard to see (i.e. there is one @ 12 o'clock). You need to allow the tranny to hang down in the rear (supported, of course) and this makes it easier to see/get at the upper connecting bolts (I usually go after them with a LOOONG extension and universal socket, it makes life so much easier). Make sure the starter motor is unbolted as well as the lower engine to bellhousing brace (if the B21 has one). This is one of the reasons I invested in a hydraulic lift. I have since removed 4 tranny's for various reasons (usually rear main seal replacement which you should SERIOUSLY consider replacing while you have the tranny out) and what I have now saved in labor costs has paid for the lift.

Thanks Bob, for your quick reaction. I have checked a hundred times if I took all bolts out. Also the one @ 12 was removed! I did as you suggested and used a hydraulic lift under the tranny, but still no movement!

The bellhouse is fixed with two guidance pins in the engine bloc. Could these be corroded? As it is actually very hot here in the south of France, could the high temperature be the reason that the (bronze ?) guidance pins have expanded and are blocking any movement? I am lacking a decent bridge, so all work has to be done under unpleasant conditions! Anyway, I have to proceed my efforts.

      Thanks for your kind help!

I doubt very much temp. has anything to do with it. Although corrosion is a faint possibility, I think it unlikely. The way you describe it, it has not moved at all, is this correct? If so, I am convinced there is still a bolt/stud that needs to be undone somewhere. If, on the other hand, it is moving but only a small bit at a time, corrosion could be the cause, keep working at it. Thank god for oil leaks, they tend to keep everything lubed up enough to separate easily;-) Looking at the rear of the engine, I think there is one at 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock and maybe another at 3 or 5 o'clock. Moving counter clockwise from 12 o'clock, there are the 2 starter motor bolts that go through the bell & engine flange and then at 6 and 7, there are 2 brace bolts. That is all I remember.

At last I managed to separate the engine and bellhouse! Thanks to your motivation and my courage to use force! I used a chisel and just put it between the engine and bellhouse and hit it very hard! I had realised that it was not a very critiical sealing and could not cause a lot of damage except cracking the bellhouse.

So indeed, I did not forget to untight any bolts!

Well, I am goiing to proceed and let's see what more problems I will face. At least I know a have a very gentle support at the other side of the atlantic!
          Thanks Bob.

When in doubt, use a bigger hammer ;-)
