rear main seal 200 1991

I am in the middle of pulling out tranny to replace rear seal leak (at 150,000 miles) - has been leaking for years (flame trap ok) - this forum has been so so much help to me and has saved me lots of $$. If any one can help me on this subject. I am using a chiltons owners manual which does not give great detail but thats what I have. Anyway, its states to remove the bracket and throttle cable from the "dashboard" - 1) where can I find this?? - also, remove the converter attaching bolts - I know about the housing bolts, I've pulled the 2 plastic housing screens on bottom of tranny, I don't see any bolts holding converter to the flyweel, 2) will the converter just come out with the tranny??
Also, 3) how do I remove the speedometer from the case?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

I think that by "throttle cable" they are talking about the "kick down" cable that runs from the throttle spool on the engine to the auto transmission. If you don't disconnect it from the throttle spool it will be damaged when you slide the transmission back. Pay careful attention to it as it is a PITA to change and can do internal damage to the transmission if pulled too hard.

"...remove the bracket and throttle cable from the 'dashboard'..."

If I were doing this job, I'd disconnect the throttle cable from the spool assembly on the intake manifold. In short, you don't want to tear the cable apart when you allow the engine to pivot downward.

    "...remove the converter attaching bolts..."

When you drop the bottom bellhousing support bracket, it exposes the bottom of the flexplate (ring gear) and the torque converter. (This bracket bolts to the bottom edge of the bellhousing and also into the block up next to the pan.) You should be able to remove one (of the four) bolts that secures the TC to the flexplate. Rotate the ring gear 90 degrees and remove the second bolt, rotate for the third, rotate for the fourth.

When you finally pull the tranny back away from the engine, be sure to keep the TC tucked up inside the bellhousing with the tranny. No need to pull it out of the tranny.

Before you dismount the flexplate from the crankshaft, BE SURE to first scribe alignment marks so the flexplate will be reistalled in alignment with the engine.

"...how do I remove the speedometer from the case?"

The speedo isn't connected to your tranny -- it connects (electrically) to the differential.

Be more specific about what you want to do with the speedo. Are you asking how to remove the instrument cluster from the dash?

hillbilly and Don Foster, thanks for your advise, and Don thanks for your
extensive, extremely helpful, "must have information to finish this job" !!
thank you both for taking the time to respond
Don, the last part concerning the speedometer, the manual states "remove the
speedometer cable from the case". I dont know what they are talking about.
I have throttle cable, cross member, and converter and housing bolts left -
If it comes up again I'll let you know (if you don't mind)

      thanks again for everyones response!!

I think the book is suggesting you have a cable operated speedo which if you had it would be located on the tranny near the output shaft. And would be the place to disconnect the cable..

Don seems to know what year you have, and maybe I missed that... I clearly do not know what year you have...

IF.... you are just after the rear main seal, and you are pretty handy, with things... There might not need be much use in lowering the tranny, and only sliding it back on a jack to sneak out the seal housing.

You still do almost all the work the same way, but the alinment of things can be faster if you are still very closly lined up. Due to the tunnel the tranny will have to be lowered somewhat, but it does not have to be lowered and dragged away.

If you do lower and drag... You might well change all the tranny fluid, which can not be done as easily becase the TC traps fluid that will not drain.. You can get a better change is all.... Mac

"...the manual states 'remove the speedometer cable from the case'. I dont know what they are talking about..."

Up to '84 or '85, the speedometer was a mechanical device. It was connected to the rear wheels by a mechanical (rotating) cable that attached to the driveshaft (which is intimately connected to the rear wheels) at the output shaft of the transmission. Therefore, on the older cars, you must decouple the speedo cable from the tranny in order to remove the tranny.

Starting in '85 or '86 Volvo switched to an electronic speedo, which derives its signal from a sensor on the differential. Thus, on the newer cars, there's no speedo cable to remove. (My '86 is electronic, so your '91 certainly is.)
