Wagon Tailgate Shocks - Cheap Part or Problem 900 1995

I recently replaced my wagon tailgate shocks AGAIN after they were just wouldn't hold up the gate anymore. Previously, I had replaced just one and after a while, it wouldn't hold. So I replaced the other....then after a while, it wouldn't hold up. So I figured I better just put two new ones on.

I bought them from eeuroparts.com and they look like the standard shocks, Made in Germany. But the new set didn't last more than a few weeks!!!!

Anybody else have this problem?

Sounds like you got a bad lot. Sachs/stabulus is the OEM maker. Try to find that brand from an on line supplier. I replaced mine a year or so ago and got the stabulus ones from fcpgroton (very cheap). I don't know if they are still carrying them. Maybe they can still get them for you.

FCP Groton is a good source. Used them to replace my tailgate lifts on my 92 965. Worked very well.

I replaced mine with a pair from Pep Boys about 3 years ago. They're still doing just fine. I think total I paid $30-40 for both.

I got mine from FCP Groton for about $14(?) each. They are after-market (possibly scan-tech) but are doing just fine. It is generally considered wise practice to replace both when one goes since they will be "balanced". The theory being, if one has gone, the other won't be far behind and is probably already weak. Just replacing the bad one can put undue stress on the new one thereby allowing it to fail prematurely. I've seen no hard evidence to back up this line of reasoning but it sounds good so I follow it anyway. I've never had 2 new ones fail so soon as you describe, sounds like they (or one) is defective.

I had the same problem. I bought two from FCP Groton back in October of last year and the wife was claiming she was already getting hit in the back of the head by the tailgate again last month. I remembered that Groton had a 1 year warranty on the parts so sent them back and also asked for a stronger set. They sent me a different brand, at no cost to me, that doesn't have the sliding clip on the ends and the ends are silver colored (no name). They do work better though.
