Tandem Master Cylinder Replacement for 544? 444-544

PV544 fans,

I went through the archives trying to find a discussion of using a tandem master cylinder to replace the single master cylinder (didn't find anything). This seems like an inportant safety upgrade for the PV544 (mine is a 1964 model). Have any of you done this? What is the name and part number for the tandem unit you used?

Mike

Mike,
I used a 72 Maverick double cylinder on my race car. Had to fabricate a mounting bracket but was able to retain stock pedal setup. We run 122 discs in the front and 1800 Es in the rear. It did work well with discs in the front and ford drums in the rear. I use a proportioning valve for necessary adjustments.

I don't know of any bolt-in replacement M/C.
I replaced the M/C on my 544 with one from a Mazda 626, but some assembly(and machining) required.
With regular maintenance, a dual circuit isn't very significant, safety wise.

Thanks for the input. Actually, the brakes are working quite well and I am getting other things (mostly electrical like lilghts, turn signals, horn) in order so that I can get out on the road.

Mike C.
