Summer road trips report in!

We finished our trip several weeks ago, but I just thought I'd like to here how far everybody's taking their babies this summer. We (3 college guys) went from Los Angeles to Boston, via Yellowstone, Chicago, and Ontario.

The car: 82 Volvo, 170k, 5 speed. Originally delivered to Malibu, CA.
Avg fuel economy: 26-27 mpg (lost track when the odo froze)
Estimated miles covered: 4500.
Highest elevation on trip: 9600 feet--Cloud Peak Wilderness in Wyoming. It was snowing in the middle of May.

Reported problems: we lost the alternator in Rapid City, SD. Whoever put that one on hadn't tightened the pulley bolt enough. It came a bit loose and the friction melted the pulley and shaft. We searched around Rapid City and finally found one. Total delay--about 6 hours. We went the rest of the way (and still continue to this day) on one fan belt. I've got a spare in back, but I don't want to put it on yet. The other problem was that the odometer stopped rolling over somewhere in Canada. Man, how am I ever going to get to the 200,000 mile club?

So where did you go?

Norway - Sweden - Poland - Czech Rep. - Germany - France - Belgium - Netherlands - Germany - Denmark - Norway. That's the plan anyway. I hope to make the trip shorter in distance and with longer stops, but I fear I'll be out-voted.

1987 244 GL: "Sven-Göran", 84,600 miles.

Erling.

Raidman -

When you are close to Houston, call me. 713-416-3078 cell. I'll buy the coffee and maybe (if I remember) bring a treat for the dog. Give me some lead time, as you are likely going US 59 to the Sam Houston Parkway/tollway to I-10 East and I hang out in northwest Harris County.

If you approach Houston after 3PM, stay off Loop 610 unless you have a need to sit in traffic a good while.

I-10 Houston to N.O. is close to 8 hours, and the speed traps help the local deficits. Keep your navigator very alert going through Beaumont.

There is construction (was far from done in Feb anyway) on I-10 east just before the LA border.

Good Trip.

Regards,

Bob
