1984 245Turbo $400 good deal or just a lemon? 200

Hi,
I was driving through a neighborhood a couple of days ago and I noticed a 1984 245 turbo for sale. The paint is rough, and the car doesn't idle, but otherwise it's in pretty good shape. The problem with the car is it won't idle unless the clutch is in. Even if you put it in neutral and let the clutch out it will die. As you let the clutch out the engine slows down until it stops when the clutch is out. I talked to the owner and he said that the clutch was too tight. We tried to loosen the clutch, but it didn't help. I was wondering if the car is stuck in gear. The only reason I don't think it's in gear is because the car doesn't move at all when you let the clutch out. Also it would only shift into reverse. Could the clutch be stuck or too tight? Should I bother with this car and try to fix it or should I just leave it alone? Is it worth the $400? Thanks

That sounds suspiciously like the transmission is seized. No matter what's wrong with the clutch, if it's in neutral, it shouldn't load up the engine much. Sounds like he broke the transmission, or if you're lucky, just the linkage for the shifter.
It could make a good parts car or restoration if the body is not rusty. Anything mechanical can be fixed and the 4-spd +OD transmission is pretty easy to find for early cars.
Hey it's only a few hundred dollars... you could recoup that by putting parts on Ebay in a week. It has got the intercooler right? That alone is worth half the price of the car. Go for it! Just don't expect to put it on the road with just $20 worth of repairs.
Not to say it couldn't happen... my 88 has so far cost me only $50 including purchase!

You know, I had a lot of the same feelings after buying my wagon. It's intercooled, and had an oil temp gauge, and some other little goodies. So I thought.. hey.. I could make the purchase price ($250) if I just parted it out.

Yeah.. right. Too many requests by people who want parts that won't fit their cars (like tail lights) or people who just never follow thru. Sure, I could probably put stuff up on eBay.. but having been screwed by PayPal and eBay once before.. not to mention eBay's rediculous privacy (or lackthereof) policy.. I'm not terribly interested in dealing with that.

To date, I've pulled some stuff to make my sedan run, but managed to sell nothing. Maybe I'm just not good at this whole selling thing. Who knows. So far the neighbors are fairly tolerant, but it's only a matter of time.

And in the end, I'm left with a car that I have to pay someone to get rid of. Yeah, it'll cost about $100 to GIVE IT TO THE JUNKYARD if I tow it myself. Grr.

I really don't think there's much to love about the 240 Turbos. Certainly nothing big enough to buy a crappy one for $400. If I had to do it over again, I would have pulled stuff from the yard, and turbo'd a normally aspirated 240.

On the plus side, I get to troll the brickboard and post the occasional large item I have for sale ;-)

Philvo has an excellent point. I was also going to say that you could use this Vo for the 245 you already have. Depends on if you want to have a parts car sticking around or not. Sounds good to me Charles, take care
