rubber brake line has bulge in it 700 1990

Happened to notice this while replacing rotors a few weeks back. The bulge looks like a section where part of the rubber has weakened. In any case, I have a feeling this isn't good, nor is it acceptable, so I need to find suitable replacement for the lines.

That being said, 1) where can I obtain it? 2) should I get steel braided lines? (are they worth it, any downsides?)

Thanks!

edit: Hmm I should search before I speak/post. :) Found this post: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=639247 and seems that the stainless steel lines are good. Any bad experiences with them? Is IPD the only one that has them?

Thanks (again)!

I strongly urge that you do not drive the car until you get this fixed! If that line bursts, you won't just have a reduced braking capacity. You'll have NO BRAKING CAPACITY! Just think how you'd feel if you plowed into some kid crossing the street. (Not to mention how the kid's gonna feel.)

The PB Blaster should help make the job much easier. If the fittings still give you some trouble, don't be affraid to heat the hell out of them with a propane torch. In this case, you don't even have to worry about damaging the rubber hoses since you're replacing them.

    Good luck.

John and Cameron know what they're talking about. I suggest you start soaking the fittings on both ends of each hose with P'Blaster right now, so they will be easy to remove when your new SS hose kit arrives. Good Luck!!

Picture the brakeline as a rubber tube surrounded by a woven reinforcement; and then another rubber tube around that. The bulge you found is probably indicative of a break in the woven reinforcement. I won't guarantee this, but my best guess is that it's a matter of a fairly short period of time before the bulge becomes a hole and you experience dramatically reduced braking effectiveness. I would *strongly* encourage you to replace this piece at your first convenience - and also to carefully inspect the other lines on the car.

Regular replacement lines are avaiable at your nearest Volvo dealership. RPR and ipd offer the braided stainless, which aren't made of rubber and thus, don't swell. Whether it's worth it to have them is your call. I have them on both our daily drivers and wouldn't go back to rubber unless it was the only choice.

Brakes. If they quit working, nothing else in the whole world matters.
