Knock sensor types and torques

There are two knock sensors used on the red engines. Type 1 is on the left in the photo below, and Type 2 is (obviously) on the right. Type 1 has the flat top, and the fastening bolt is torqued to 8 ft-lbs (11Nm), and Type 2 has the domed top and the fastening bolt is torqued to 15 ft-lbs (20Nm).

I don't suppose the torque is on the sensor? If not where did you cull the info from?

The information is from a Volvo factory service manual. I ran across the information a few weeks ago and just got around to making the post.

John,

Are they interchangeable in terms of wiring? Is one any better than the other? Do knock sensors wear out? If one has 200,000 miles and 14 years of use, should it necessarily be replaced?

Philip

Yes, the knock sensors are interchangable. I would assume that Bosch came out with the Type 2 knock sensor as an improved version.

I remember abe crombie stating that the knock sensors had a ong life, and gave little trouble. As a matter of routine maintenance I replaced the knock sensor on my car with a new one several years ago. It was about $40 from IPS.

If there is no knock sensor signal, the EZK defaults to maximum retarded timing.

Dont forget the screw-in Chrysler knock sensor on the '83-'84 B23F! I don't have the torque spec on me at the moment.
