AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SWAP 200 1981

CURRENTLY MY 81 245 GLT HAS A 3 SPEED AUTOMATIC, AND I WAS WONDERING WHAT OTHER TRANSMISSIONS WOULD BE INTERCHANGABLE, BECAUSE I WANT A 4 SPEED WITH OD THE 3 SPEED IS VER UN-ECONOMICAL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ANY INPUT WOULD BE A GREAT HELP.
THANKS, MARK

Hey Mark,

If I'm not mistaken your engine is hooked up to the AW55. You could swap it with a AW70 or AW71 4-speed tranny. You would ofcourse need the tarnny out of a 4-CYL as well as the cross member, torque converter, shifter, OD relay with all the wiring, OD Button (On the shifter knob), and a longer speedo cable. It seems that your in the same boat I am in. I have a 79 264GL and I am also trying to convert the 3-speed BW55 to a 4-speed AW70. Type in my name in the search bar and see the past posts I have regarding this change over. If I'm not mistaken there is someone I know who is selling a AW70 tranny (4-Speed or really the 3-speed with OD) that came out of a 4-CYL. I am researching the different types of trannys that can fit my car and have also found out many things about your car. There are to many to post but shoot me a e-mail and I would be more than happy to let you know what I have come up with. Not only is this type of conversion practial and in my opinion easy, but the hardest thing I think would be getting good parts. Everything else will come together. Good Luck!

Sincerely,

well other than the tranny all you need is the shifter drive shaft and wiring harness it is a simple change over and if you really want the wiring easy. and if you plan to never pull a load you can hook the od up to ignition power source however even if you do pull or climb mountains it will auto cut out od I recomend wiring it in except for maybe the dash light good luck I have done several like yours any many manual to auto and german ZF to asian warner.
