Steering Rack 700 1991

How difficult is it to replace the steering rack in a 1991 740? Is there any welding involved? I've done a pretty good amount of stuff to my ford, but have never worked on my brothers volvo before. It is very hard to steer and the mechanic said it would need a new rack.

    No welding involved. It's pretty straighforward really. Take off your splash pan, powerwash the thing at the car wash, and you'll see exactly what's in there. 2 big U-bolts really is all that holds it in. A self-locking bolt in the u-joint clamp. Take apart the inner or outer tie rod ends, whatever you're not replacing. Clean all the hydraulic connections thoroughly with Brakleen or something to keep the dirt out of the fittings before removing them. Careful not to distort the lines too much. Flare wrenches are helpful but not necessary.

      actually 700s use 2 long straight bolts not u bolts like a 240. but it is very easy to see you have to remove the small square metal cover under the rack about 8x8 inches. i would flush out the whole system and get the nasty oil out of the pump and reservoir too.
