240 Engine Dies 200 1987

Expert Advice Needed: My '87 240 (B230F) always starts right up. When the car is cold, (not driven for more than a few hours) it will die every time I put it in reverse or drive. The car starts right up again and when I put it in gear, it's fine and I can drive away. If I rev the engine a little bit when it's cold or let it idle for more than a minute, the chances of the engine dying decrease.

The condition has worsened over the last few months and the car sometimes feels like it is going to stall when braking for a stop light. The rpms will drop, the engine kind of chugs a bit and I can feel the computer kicking in to prevent the car from stalling. It is so noticeable that when I brake, I feel the engine fighting back against my braking.

Here's what's been done over the past 6 months:
New plugs, wires, O2 sensor, fuel filter
Cleaned throttle body, flame trap, vacuum lines checked

Any ideas?

It sounds like the idle air control (IAC) valve is sticking or possibly plugged up. That's the silver cylinder right under the throttle body- on a little bracket, with 2 black rubber 3/4 inch hoses going to it. This regulates idle speed. It's probably in need of a good cleaning just as the throttle body was. A little oil in it after cleaning may help free it up as well- I like Marvel Mystery Oil but 3-in-1 or other light oils will probably work fine as well. If this doesn't cure it, double check for vacuum leaks- mine had a bunch of holes in the black plastic air intake hose from the AMM to intake. ($14 at FCP Groton). Then consider replacing the IAC valve if nothing else seems to help.
Also make sure the throttle position switch does click in the throttle body just as the throttle closes or opens from the closed position.

I aggree with Rob, that's something you definatly need to check. My old one was spewing out oil from the electrical connector when i unpluged it once. Sometimes if the pressure builds up too much in your lines it'll completely ruin one of these. I don't know if it happens often, but it happened to mine. I went to a junkyard and pulled one off a 740 with the hoses along with it - it makes it a lot easier to switch out that way. If your flame trap was heavily blocked up this might be something else that got screwed. Hope it helps. Laters...

      -jg OUT!

you say "vacume lines checked" but did you do a vacume test on the vacumen pod? it located at the bottom of the black box right inside fender. put another lenth of hose on it and suck on the hose, if it sucks your tounge and stays stuck then the pod is good otherwise you wont get a suction on it.
