Air control question 200 1983

My 1983 245 is surging in the mourning now. I have been lurking here on the BB for some time and I feel the best place to start looking would be the IACV. I think I have read where others have put a regular valve in its place. I will of course, start of cleaning the iac but if that does not work, what kind of valve can I put here? And can I run a control cable to it from inside car.(like old choke)? and will I need to put a resistor in the IACV curcuit to make the computer think it is still there? Or, am I just as insane as I am broke?
Thanks

Joe Scott

Air control question 200 1983

The IACV (idle air control valve) is actually like a motor, so you cannot really replace it with mearly a valve. It has an in and out hose, and a connector to the hardness.

Sometimes tapping on it frees it, sometimes poeple open it up somehow and clean it our, or spray into it I think...

But check and see if it is working when the car is idling COLD, I think at that time it is suppsed to supply more air (see FAQ at BB).

You might consider trying a replacment AMM too, go with the same vintage though (same last three digits).

Enjoy,

Thanks greg_mustang 200 1983

I have allready replaced the amm to address a different problem. I thought I had seen somekind of valve thingy, not surprised that I am wrong. I have not yet begun to troubleshoot it due to little time. It has not gotten really bad yet, so I am just thinking ahead at this point.
Thanks for reply

Joe
